House Republicans have crafted legislation that would effectively end sanctuary cities. Why now? Probably because midterm elections are right around the corner and, if there’s one issue on which the GOP has the backing of most Americans, it’s that of illegal alien crime. If brought to the House floor, this bill probably won’t pass — but Democrats will be forced, once again, to vote against what is essentially an 80/20 issue, that is, a problem most people want dealt with.

While this legislation would cut federal funding to sanctuary jurisdictions, the real hammer is the part of it that would allow the victims of crimes committed by illegals to sue local officials who shield an alien offender from immigration enforcement or release them from prison.

A Deadly Trend in Sanctuary Cities

How many times has an illegal alien committed a crime in one of the Democrats’ sanctuary cities and either avoided prison time or was released early, only to commit another violent crime? The number is far too high. While the left-wing media all but ignores these incidents, they are frequently reported elsewhere — and it has happened over and over again. Given that fact, this GOP legislation would potentially unleash an avalanche of lawsuits.

As things stand today, state and local officials enjoy “absolute immunity,” which should never have been allowed for any reason at any level of government when the official in question is intentionally aiding a criminal.

How did America end up with sanctuary cities anyway? The left, very much in cooperation with elected Democrats at the state and local level — with the blessing of their colleagues in Congress — tried to sell the idea as some grand act of compassion for poor “undocumented immigrants.” But despite the Trump administration’s not inconsiderable efforts to enforce federal immigration law, the problem of illegal alien crime is out of hand.

Figuratively, the bodies of Americans killed both intentionally and unintentionally by illegal aliens are strewn across the entire country. The victims or victims’ families rarely get justice. And these illegals, too many of whom are violent habitual criminals, continue to walk the streets, which is precisely why Democrat claims of compassion ring entirely hollow.

The Left’s Phony Compassion

With a few rare exceptions, no one on the left has ever expressed a shred of remorse for the victims of illegal alien crime. Indeed, some left-wing activists — and some elected Democrats — have displayed open contempt for the families of Americans killed by illegals. So, sanctuary cities are not, and never have been, about compassion or human dignity.

One cannot claim to be protecting an illegal alien out of compassion and then, when the alien rapes and murders someone, react as though that victim’s family is a nuisance. Yet that is precisely what too many Democrats and progressive activists do. By any sane and decent measure, they are in fact guilty of a monstrous lack of compassion.

“Sanctuary politicians must put an end to reckless policies that play Russian roulette with American lives,” said a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson after an illegal alien from India gunned down a woman in a California parking lot in September.

The Shut Down Sanctuary Policies Act is out of committee, but no word yet on if, or when, it will go to the House floor. The bill basically does what shouldn’t even be needed: It reaffirms the supremacy of federal immigration law and enforcement over the politically motivated decisions of state and local officials. It supposedly forces state- and city-level leaders to comply with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers. Whether that will make any difference is debatable. But when city officials start getting sued, maybe that’s when the difference will be seen.

4 Questions

The story, in brief

1What would the Shut Down Sanctuary Policies Act do?

The bill would cut federal funding to sanctuary jurisdictions and reaffirm the supremacy of federal immigration law over state and local political decisions. It also would force state and city leaders to comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainers. A key provision would let victims of crimes committed by illegal aliens sue local officials who shield offenders or release them from prison.

2Why are House Republicans pushing sanctuary city legislation now?

The timing is tied to the approaching midterm elections and to an issue Republicans believe has broad public support. The measure is described as one Democrats will be forced to vote against, even if it is unlikely to pass the House floor. The political value is in highlighting illegal alien crime and putting opponents on record.

3Why do Republicans say sanctuary cities are dangerous?

Republicans argue sanctuary policies let illegal aliens avoid prison time or gain early release, only to commit more violent crimes. The piece says such incidents have happened repeatedly and that victims and their families rarely get justice. It contends these policies put Americans at risk by shielding offenders from immigration enforcement.

4What happens next for the Shut Down Sanctuary Policies Act?

The measure has cleared committee, but there is no word yet on whether or when it will reach the House floor. The piece says it probably will not pass if brought up. It also suggests the real impact may come later if local officials begin facing lawsuits under the bill's liability provisions.
