The United States Supreme Court ruled today, April 29, in Louisiana v. Callais that Louisiana was discriminatory when it created a second majority black district.
The 6-3 ruling determined that Louisiana gave too much consideration to race when it last redrew its Congressional Districts map. Chief Justice John Roberts took issue with a Democrat district in Louisiana that is more than 200 miles in length and was drawn like a “snake.”
The current map, drawn after the 2020 census, had previously been struck down by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
The ruling has broad implications for how the Voting Rights Act is enforced and followed.
