Universal healthcare has been a Democratic talking point since the mid-90s when Hillary Clinton played First Lady, the lawmaker. Since then, because the left says so, healthcare is a right. The Constitution says nothing about making doctors and prescriptions a “right,” but liberals have said so; therefore, it must happen. Recently, actress turned politico Cynthia Nixon touted statewide single-payer healthcare through the proposed New York Health Act. When asked how to fund the system, she merely said,” We will figure it out later.” Her response reveals not only ignorance but irresponsibility as well.
Nixon is running in the Democratic primary for governor in the state of New York against incumbent Andrew Cuomo. The race has seen both candidates move to the hardline left on many issues that are bound to cause problems for the Empire State.
Tax Time
Nixon was interviewed this week by the New York Daily News. During questioning, her campaign promise of health care for all arose and she was asked how to fund the single-payer system, NYHA, that she wishes to implement. Her response was flippant. She stated the law should get passed first, and then the details will be figured out at a later, unspecified, date.
An increased tax rate funds single-payer healthcare, and, in fact, it is the only way to achieve such a goal. In order for the system to survive, citizens will see a tax increase, even though most citizens do not want to see that. Nixon ran from the inquiry because it will hurt her chances of winning. She clearly does not care very much about her voters if she is not willing to tell them the truth about program financing.
New York State property tax varies from county to county. Doing simple math will put perspective into the citizens’ tax burden. A house that costs $150,000 in Suffolk County at a tax rate of 2.219% will cost approximately $3,329 annually.
In the past, Nixon has cited a RAND Corporation study that cites the cost of statewide healthcare funding, and the numbers to prop up the law are not pretty. The percentage increase would drive state taxes upward over 150%. The example of Suffolk County’s taxes shows that homeowners in that area would go from paying $3,329 a year in property taxes to $8,322. Those numbers would also have to increase by the year 2022, in just four years, according to Nixon’s plan, so one could see why she ducked and dodged funding questions.
Healthcare for Illegals
To further complicate things for the candidate, she also wants to give “free” healthcare to illegal aliens as well. Politically, she is putting herself in a tight spot. For decades illegals have driven down wages, and taken jobs from citizens and now Nixon’s plan incentivizes aliens to come to New York and stay. She also happens to be campaigning to abolish ICE and keep the state in sanctuary status.
The New York Health Act is not just about healthcare. It is about transforming the country, creating a government reliance among citizens and immigrants alike, as well as attracting more illegal aliens who will vote for Democrats.
Nixon cannot answer the question of payment. That is not to say she does not know how to finance her healthcare program, because she does – she just doesn’t want to tell the public about it.
Nixon has already become the quintessential leftist politician.
