President Donald Trump won the White House after promising to close the US-Mexico border and crack down on illegal immigration, a pair of crises that many agree were caused by Democrat policies enacted during former President Joe Biden’s administration. Trump has largely followed through on that promise, with estimates suggesting that roughly 3 million illegal immigrants have left the US and that illegal crossings at the southern border have dropped around 95% compared to Biden-era levels.

But that progress could be reversed in no time if Democrats regain some power in November. In fact, a new report from House Judiciary Committee Republicans examines the sanctuary city policies supported by many on the left and what they could mean for future immigration enforcement under Democrat leadership.

Sanctuary Danger

While scrutinizing Fairfax County, Virginia, and its prosecutor, Steve Descano, the committee discovered that Descano “campaigned on helping illegal aliens avoid immigration consequences after committing crimes, and he's followed through.”

Descano allegedly refuses to prosecute illegal immigrants arrested for driving under the influence, felony drug possession, assault of a law enforcement officer, felony grand larceny, fraud, shoplifting, and destruction of property. According to the House Judiciary GOP, most of the illegal immigrants accused of those crimes went on to commit additional offenses, some more serious than the original charges, including violent crimes and murder.

In one shocking case highlighted by the committee, illegal immigrant Abdul Jalloh allegedly fatally stabbed Stephanie Minter at a bus stop in northern Virginia. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Jalloh, who is from Sierra Leone, has an extensive arrest record that “includes more than 30 arrests for charges of rape, malicious wounding, assault, drug possession, identity theft, trespassing, larceny, firing a weapon, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and pick-pocketing.”

Despite Jalloh’s lengthy record, “Descano’s office dropped the charges in almost every case,” House Judiciary Committee Republicans noted, adding, “Before the murder, the Fairfax County Police Department had warned Descano’s office about the danger Jalloh posed to community. Descano released him anyway. Stephanie Minter should be alive today.”

This wasn’t a single mistake that ended in tragedy. The prosecutor “dropped more than 50 charges against a serial fraudster from China and allowed MULTIPLE aliens charged with malicious wounding, strangulation, and assault and battery to escape accountability and reoffend.”

Democrat Sanctuary Support

Democrats widely support sanctuary cities despite the danger they present to Americans. Last year, Rep. Rob Menendez (D-NJ), joined by Illinois Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (D) during a press conference, called sanctuary cities “a critical part of our nation's fabric.”

And wouldn’t you know it, Ramirez recently introduced the “Reimagining Safety Act,” which seeks to abolish not only US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), but nearly the entire Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Ramirez makes an exception for CISA, FEMA, and TSA, which would be transferred to another department.

Left-wing lawmakers are already laying the groundwork to disrupt President Trump’s immigration and border security agenda. If Democrats regain control of the House, and quite possibly the Senate, in November, what’s happening in Fairfax County could become a reality in communities across the country.

4 Questions

The story, in brief

1What did House Judiciary Republicans report about Fairfax County and Steve Descano?

House Judiciary Committee Republicans said Fairfax County prosecutor Steve Descano campaigned on helping illegal immigrants avoid immigration consequences after committing crimes and then followed through. The committee said he refused to prosecute illegal immigrants arrested on charges including DUI, felony drug possession, assault of a law enforcement officer, grand larceny, fraud, shoplifting, and destruction of property.

2Why do House Judiciary Republicans say sanctuary city policies are dangerous?

According to House Judiciary Republicans, many illegal immigrants whose charges were dropped later committed additional offenses, including more serious crimes, violent crimes, and murder. The committee said Descano dropped more than 50 charges against a serial fraudster from China and allowed multiple aliens charged with malicious wounding, strangulation, and assault and battery to escape accountability and reoffend.

3Who is Abdul Jalloh, and how is his case tied to Fairfax County policy?

The committee highlighted Abdul Jalloh, an illegal immigrant from Sierra Leone who allegedly fatally stabbed Stephanie Minter at a bus stop in northern Virginia. The Department of Homeland Security said Jalloh had more than 30 arrests, and House Judiciary Republicans said Descano's office dropped charges in almost every case despite police warnings about the danger he posed.

4What could happen to immigration enforcement if Democrats gain power in November?

The report argues that progress under President Donald Trump on border security and illegal immigration could be reversed if Democrats regain power. It says left-wing lawmakers are already laying the groundwork to disrupt Trump's immigration and border security agenda, and that policies seen in Fairfax County could spread to communities across the country if Democrats win the House and possibly the Senate.
