Gunslingers for Liberty: Constitutional Attacks – 10.6.19

Both the 1st and 2nd Amendments are under fire.

Editor’s note: Miss some of this week’s news, public policy and politics? Stay current, keep up and get out ahead of the pack with Liberty Nation’s Sunday News Round-up. Yeehaw!

First Amendment

New York City is leading the charge in criminalizing speech. While it has been apparent for some years that the attacks on free speech have been increasing, rarely has it been so open and politicized. The term “illegal alien” is now on the list as a potential hate crime.

As Liberty Nation’s Jeff Charles writes:

The ironically-named Commission on Human Rights, which is charged with enforcing New York City’s Human Rights Law, recently announced the implementation of a new ordinance that would punish those who engage in certain types of speech against illegal immigrants. According to the organization’s press release, the “use of the term ‘illegal alien,’ among others, when used with intent to demean, humiliate, or harass a person, is illegal under the law.”

The idea that accurately describing someone’s immigration status can now be a violation of a Human Right (why else would this be brought forward by the Commission on Human Rights), is little more than a thinly veiled attack on those who do not support open borders.

How exactly will laws already on the books that deal with illegal aliens be properly handled if a police report or an ICE investigation cannot even use the term that describes someone’s status? This ordinance is to be used to stop teh current laws being enforced by making it impossible for authorities to file a simple report without running afoul of violating rights.

It has been window-dressed as only criminalizing those that use it in a derogatory term, but as we have seen from supposed Hate Crime laws, the offense is in the eye of the beholder, and it would take a fairly so-so lawyer little time to argue that wanting to deport someone could be classed as a negative action against the person.

What to Watch For

Using the term Human Rights is becoming ubiquitous. The reason for this is that any who run afoul of these new rules can be dismissed as “Human Rights abusers.” It is a war on language, nothing less.

Second Amendment

Democrat candidates met in the desert to discuss what should be done about American gun violence. As was expected, this was not a conference to look at gth ecasues of violence in general, or a meeting to sift fact from fiction in the gun debate … it was an all-out attack against the Second Amendment. What’s more, it was a showboating platform for candidates to show how anti-gun, and ill-informed they really were.

Almost every policy suggestion was a slogan, and not a single one could reasonably be described as workable in terms of stopping people from killing each other with guns.

Liberty Nation’s Scott D. Cosenza sums it up nicely:

None offered answers to that question, but save Bernie Sanders, recovering from his stent installations, all the 2020 Dem contenders were there and ready to offer a fix for America: removing our civil rights. Announcing plans to ban AR-15s and weapons like them (any modern rifle, for instance), closing various loopholes, and requiring nationwide background checks and licensing were de rigueur. Closing loopholes must poll quite well because the list of them that needs to be closed for us to achieve peace keeps growing.

This was not an event designed to showcase a well-considered policy. It was a Kabuki Theater of “who cares more.” These policies and these candidates used what could have been a constructive summit to virtue-signal their credentials and show that they care more about children than the next candidate.

What to Watch For

Despite what their handlers may tell them,  polling on gun-control is NOT in their favor. The majority of US citizens believe that the right to own firearms should be protected under the Constitution. If they keep pushing the narrative that American leadership is not reacting to what the people want, they may find themselves surprised at the lack of support.

Washington Whispers & Other Juicy Tidbits

Be on the lookout for:

  • Bernie Sanders will begin making public appearances this week. How he looks, how he holds up while recovering from his heart attack will impact the campaign donations in a major way. If he looks even a little tired, it will spell the end of his campaign.
  • AOC’s new raft of policies to create a “fair society” will come under fire. The idea that illegal immigrants should have equal access to the welfare system may be going just a little too far for even those who back her Green New Deal proposals.
