Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II Passes – A Defier of All Expectation

Her like shall not be seen again.

Queen Elizabeth II of Britain has died aged 96. She was the United Kingdom’s longest-reigning monarch, and with her death, an era distinguished by her grace and decorum comes to an end. She passed quietly at her Balmoral estate in Scotland, surrounded by close family members, including Prince Charles, who is now King Charles. Leaders from all over the world have expressed their condolences and remarked on the longevity and stability of her rule during a period in history that is noted for its political and social upheaval.

Early on Thursday morning, September 8, Buckingham Palace issued a rare statement regarding the queen’s health. “Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision.” When the announcement of her worsening condition came, members of the royal family began making their way to Balmoral. It is believed that all of her four children were in attendance when she died.

Unmatched Dignity

Political sentiment against the British monarchy increased in recent years, with many questioning the need for royalty in this more egalitarian age. Scandals involving family members took much of the shine from the pomp and circumstance Queen Elizabeth embodied in the nation. And yet, despite the negative press targeted at the more minor royals, the queen remained unscathed by the attacks, continuing in quiet dignity the responsibility she adopted more than 70 years ago when she donned the crown at age 25.

The queen has been a steadying global influence amid a sea of social chaos. While loud voices have condemned the “colonialism and racism” of the British Empire, nations have sought closer and closer ties through trade, partnerships, and the Commonwealth. She inspired patience in those who were quick to anger and soothed firebrand politicians where typical diplomacy continued to fail. Her faithful service to the nation, as a mechanic during war, and as head of state to countries around the world has provided a template of equanimity for world leaders.

What Happens Next?

Operation London Bridge is now in effect. For at least the next 12 days, the functioning of the nation will effectively stop. Flags will be flown at half-mast until the day after Queen Elizabeth’s funeral. During the interim period, a “call cascade” will take place, informing all national and foreign offices of state of necessary details while the national anthem, passports, police uniforms, and even money are updated. Official messages from heir King Charles III and Parliament will be broadcast.

Arrangements will be made for the eventual coronation of King Charles.

A Life of Service for Queen Elizabeth

On her 21st birthday in 1947, the young Elizabeth spoke via radio to the world and made a declaration that seems all the more poignant today. She said:

“I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.

“But I shall not have strength to carry out this resolution alone unless you join in it with me, as I now invite you to do: I know that your support will be unfailingly given. God help me to make good my vow, and God bless all of you who are willing to share in it.”

To the world at large, and to the people of Great Britain, she kept that promise.
