Before President Donald Trump first arrived on the political scene, the Deep State was perhaps rarely, if ever, talked about – but it was never just a conspiracy theory. It’s all very Hollywood. Yet, if there is one story that demonstrates the power of this intragovernmental network, it is the story revealed in FBI memos recently made public by the White House Government Transparency Task Force. The FBI investigated then-45th President Donald Trump because he fired then-FBI Director James Comey. The Bureau concocted a justification for the probe that even many of its own agents thought was baseless.
Just the News, which has reported in detail on the entire unraveling of the Trump-Russia collusion hoax, published a couple of particularly chilling quotes from internal FBI documents from May of 2017, when the FBI launched its investigation, “Oxferd Comma”:
“The FBI is opening a full investigation based on an articulable factual basis that reasonably indicates that President Donald J. Trump may be or has been, wittingly or unwittingly, involved in activities for or on behalf of the Government of the Russian Federation which may constitute violations of federal criminal law or threats to the national security of the United States.”
FBI Gone Rogue, or Not
Vague, at best, this statement was the Bureau’s rationale, or attempt at it. It gets worse, though. This electronic communication stated the goal was not only to determine if Trump could credibly be linked to Moscow, but also to “seek to determine whether President Trump and others yet to be named obstructed and/or conspiracy to obstruct any associated FBI investigation.”
The FBI, then, arbitrarily granted itself the authority to investigate a sitting president if it chose to accuse Trump of obstructing or planning to obstruct its investigation of him.
Perhaps it is less of a Hollywood story and more of a Moscow circa 1950s story.
Is the FBI the sinister Deep State, then? It perhaps is – or was – the tip of the spear. The Deep State goes beyond that one agency. John Brennan, former CIA director and currently a celebrated part of the Trump character assassination project that the left has been peddling for a decade, knew the Trump-Russia story was a nothingburger.
Deep State v. Trump
In 2016, Brennan briefed his boss – at the time – President Barack Obama, claiming the Russian collusion story likely was nothing more than an effort by the Hillary Clinton campaign team to smear Trump. Those findings have since been corroborated by previously released documents.
It need hardly be pointed out that the president, like all presidents before him since the FBI came into existence, possesses full authority to fire the agency’s director at any time. FBI top brass, however, simply decided President Trump may have been acting on Vladimir Putin’s orders when he fired Comey.
The Deep State effort – and it continues to this day – to sabotage Trump is likely the biggest political scandal in American history. Still, not one of the central figures behind the hoax, and those responsible for perpetuating it, has been held accountable, other than by losing their jobs or being defeated at the ballot box.
