Going postal — the term for folks losing their minds and committing ridiculous and often deadly acts — has made a comeback on the other side of the United States Postal Service (USPS). Angry over mail-in balloting challenges and fearful of COVID-19 spreading at polling places, hundreds of protesters laid siege to the Postmaster General’s front lawn. Are these people stupid, or do they not understand the concept of irony?
On Aug. 15, the radical-left malcontents of Shutdown D.C. held a protest at Postmaster Louis DeJoy’s Washington home and followed the next day with a snarling traffic assault on his Greensboro, NC, residence. All were sparking off the president’s steps to curb mail-in voter fraud and responses from Democratic leadership on The Hill.
The president wants to curb mail-in ballots to reduce voter fraud. Democrats cite pandemic times for pandemic measures. The reality is the USPS cannot handle an inundation of mail. Americans simply do not mail as many letters or bills or send “wish you were here” postcards since social media and the Internet have the world going paperless. Rural and small-town post offices have been closed, mail carrier positions eliminated, and budgets slashed drastically the last ten years or more.
There is no quick fix for an election less than 100 days out.
Throw Money at It – We Will Feel Better
As the USPS warned states that ballots cast by mail may not make a Nov. 3 deadline, Democrats pointed the finger at President Trump for new pricing schedules, mail delays, and continued cutback of post office jobs. The Postal Service is a quasi-federal agency– a branch of the federal government, overseen by a board of governors, that lives and dies by budget increases and shortfalls.
It’s a big mess of “who’s on first,” and it’s a hot potato for Democrats this week. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has demanded House members return to the Capitol, calling the current situation a “crisis” and demanding $25 billion in aid to the withering USPS and an extra $3.5 billion to help states conduct their elections. Heck, the Obama administration aided and abetted the decline of viability for mail-in balloting when he authorized the removal of more than 12,000 blue mail collection boxes. He also went after Saturday mail delivery, and, in his 2013 budget restructuring, he made employees pay more to receive downgraded health benefits — imagine that.
The reality we face today is the USPS cannot handle the number of mail-in ballots. No amount of money can solve the problems by Nov. 3.
In the throes of yet another protest that pleases only members of the drive-by media, proponents of mail-in ballots are claiming it is Trump’s way to rig the election. That is simply not the case. Sending millions of voter cards without proper authentication and then returning them by the USPS — with serious doubts of enough time to tally by Nov. 3 — is a fool’s mission. The election must be conducted by counties and certified by states as per the U.S. Constitution.
And get off the guy’s lawn already — he may go postal.
