Good grief. Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp just got not so funny – very fast. Last night at the Glastonbury Music Festival in the U.K. the madcap Captain Jack Sparrow lost the humor and kept the madness when he asked the crowd:
“When was the last time an actor assassinated a president? I’m not insinuating anything,” he added, “by the way this will be in the press and it will be horrible.”
As the crowd cheered, Depp said: “I want to clarify I’m not an actor, I lie for a living. However, it’s been awhile and maybe it’s time.”
Depp apparently channeled the famed John Wilkes Booth of Ford’s Theatre in the successful assassination of Abraham Lincoln and continued his tirade to roars of approval from the crowd.
Never a fan of President Trump, Depp’s comments come at a particularly problematic time following the shooting of Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) at an Alexandria, VA baseball practice field just last week. It also comes on the heels of a Shakespeare in the Park play where the assassination of Julius Caesar occurs with the actor dressed as a Donald Trump look-alike. And then there’s the bloody headless “joke” of Trump held up for all the kiddies to see by Kathy Griffin.
Later Depp apologized to People Magazine, saying it was “only a joke.”
When are these Hollywood types going to understand that these jokes are not funny? At all.
