- In separate addresses on May 30, both President Trump and Attorney General William Barr said legitimate protests over the killing of George Floyd had been hijacked by radical left-wing groups. The AG and the president both made specific references to Antifa. “In many places,” Barr said in a statement, “it appears the violence is planned, organized, and driven by anarchistic and far-left extremists, using Antifa-like tactics.“
- The Senate Judiciary Committee is planning to hold hearings on police use of force, in the wake of George Floyd’s killing. Floyd died after a Minneapolis police officer pinned him to the ground by putting one knee on his neck and holding him in that position. The hearings, as yet unscheduled, will look at “racial discrimination regarding the use of force, as well as building stronger bonds between communities and police,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), according to a report from Axios.
- On June 4, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will vote on the authority of Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), who chairs the committee, to issue subpoenas relating to the Obama administration’s surveillance of the 2016 Trump campaign. Among those who Jonhson wants to subpoena is former FBI Director James Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan. However, Johnson and other GOP senators have numerous other Obama-era officials in their sights.
