Trump Prepares for the 72nd United Nations GA

by | Sep 18, 2017 | International, Politics

In New York tomorrow, President Trump will give an address to the 72nd United Nations General Assembly. After which he will lead the American delegation in around 20 key meetings. Much of the talk is expected to cover issues such as North Korea, Iran, and trade. This will be a major test for the president and is much anticipated by world leaders and media.

During a Reform Meeting today, the president spoke openly about the United Nations and gave some clues as to what subjects he will raise in tomorrow’s speech. The president made note of recent failures within the U.N. stating that:

“In recent years, the United Nations has not reached its full potential because of bureaucracy and mismanagement.”And that “While the United Nations on a regular budget has increased more than 140 percent and its staff has more than doubled since 2000, we are not seeing the results in line with this investment.”

Reforms Needed

President Trump pointed out that he expects some key reforms from the U.N. in terms of protecting whistleblowers and oversight on international military operations. He would prefer the focus to be on “results rather than process.”

“We must ensure that no one and no member state shoulders a disproportionate share of the burden, and that’s militarily or financially,” he said. “We also ask that every peacekeeping mission have clearly defined goals and metrics for evaluating success.”

On Liberty Nation tomorrow, we will have a complete breakdown of what the president says in his historic speech, what the reactions are, and an in-depth analysis of what his speech means for the U.S. and the rest of the world. Don’t forget to check back in!
