This Week in Open Borders America: No Borders Better for Health

California’s new border wall may be too dangerous.

Open Borders are Better for Health?

Open borders are better for migrants’ health, or at least that’s what first year students at University of California, Los Angeles medical school are reportedly learning. Do No Harm, a group that protects “healthcare from the consequences of identity politics,” according to its website, claim students were assigned reading material advocating for the abolition of borders.

Fox News reported that one of the scholarly papers, titled “Beyond border health: Infrastructural violence and the health of border abolition,” calls for a “no borders system that privileges liberatory solidarity with migrants.” The news outlet stated, “The authors blame health disparities among migrants on border enforcement and call for abolition of borders as a ‘medical intervention’ to solve this problem.” However, Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, board chair of Do No Harm, told Fox News Digital:

“UCLA school of medicine is attempting to crate a cohort of social activists through their absurd descent into anarchic views of national borders. It is clear that medical educators know nothing about the social and economic cost of the current border crisis. For them to instruct medical students in far-left social concepts only further dilutes the quality of medical education and inevitably leads to more social division and lower quality healthcare.”

The System Isn’t Broken

New Banner - This Week in Open Borders AmericaThe subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs held a hearing on February 15 titled “The Consequences of Catch and Release at the Border.” Three people testified, including Mr. Matt O’Brien, director of investigations, Immigration Reform Law Institute. In total, O’Brien has about 30 years working with migrants, including as a former immigration judge, former head of National Security Division at US Citizenship and Immigration Services, and as a former assistant chief council with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He claims the system is not broken; it’s the blatant disregard for the laws we have in place causing the border crisis. “[T]he flagrant disregard for the provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act that has currently become the norm is leading us into a public safety and national security crisis from which the United States may find itself unable to recover,” he testified.

According to the INA, O’Brien said, it is mandated that most people encountered by border control should be ejected from the US or detained pending further investigation. He added:

“Despite consistent claims to the contrary, America’s immigration system is not broken. Far from it, in fact. The problem is that too many administrations have simply ignored whatever aspects of the INA they dislike or find politically inconvenient. And they do so wholly in order to pander to perceived political constituencies, while ignoring the safety, security and economic interests of the wider American public. The current administration has engaged in this deleterious behavior to an unprecedented extent and has essentially chosen to ignore the INA in its entirety.”

Jason Houser, former chief of staff of ICE, after complimenting Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for a job well done despite recently being impeached, argued that the system is not broken. Instead, he pointed to “Outdated policies, inadequate resources, and a lack of legislative reforms over time have left our immigration enforcement agencies struggling to keep pace with the ever-evolving landscape of immigration enforcement.”

Dems Building a Border Wall?

With the cry for open borders, it’s a little surprising to discover California, a state that just offered all migrants medical benefits, is constructing a barrier at Friendship Park between San Diego and Tijuana. According to Newsweek, this structure is built with an anti-climbing design. Fox 5 described it as having a “metal wing or wedge, or a comma on its side with the pointy end hanging over the Mexican side of the border like an awning.” This is a first of its kind and is supposed to make it much more difficult to climb into the US.

Not everyone is pleased with the new design, though. Friends of Friendship Park shared a photo of the construction on Instagram with the message, “Division sows pain, frustration, and sadness. Behold the binational garden, where new walls obstruct views across.”

Pedro Rios, of the American Friends Service Committee, said it was ironic to test the prototype wall at the park, which was inaugurated in 1971 by then first lady Pat Nixon, as a symbol of ties between the US and Mexico. He claims the new design is more dangerous. “We continue to see an increase in people that are falling from the border wall and seeking medical treatment,” he said. “In this case, if they fall onto the Mexican side then we won’t have an accounting for how dangerous this new feature might be.” He added that the park is “meant to symbolize the unity between both countries, and people coming together. This new feature, which will likely cause more injuries, does the exact opposite.”

Instead of preventing open borders, ICE recently drafted a contingency plan to cut down on migrant detentions, which means thousands of illegals could soon be released into America’s neighborhoods. What will next week bring us in Open Borders America?
