While many would argue that the Democratic Party does not actually possess a soul, the unquantifiable Golden Thread that ties together the increasingly fragmented affiliation of socialists, progressives, and Never Trumpers is surely being stretched to breaking point.
As the new blood Democrats pull one way, and the hysterical old guard pull another, what emerges is a tightrope that the American public are wary of stepping foot on.
Tribal Voting
The Dems have long been able to call upon a swath of U.S. voters to rally to their call when election time falls due. But as polarization of ideological viewpoints within the party becomes more pronounced, the average Joe and Jill are left wondering whether their vote will really be going towards a group that represents their own ideals.
This is not so much a problem for the Republican Party. As President Trump leaps from success to success, he has managed the impossible and united the GOP behind him. Sweeping tax cuts, two Supreme Court justices appointed, a booming economy, these are achievements that the vast majority of right-leaning voters can relate to and embrace as part of their political ethos. But what of left-leaning voters?
If they cast a vote for blue, will they usher into power those who dream of a socialist Utopia, in the form of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or the Mom and Pop Democrat who just wants a little more social equality? To deny that this is on the minds of voters shows either a callous disregard for their intelligence or a dishonest pursuit of narrative.
Wild Card
And then we have the Joker in the pack, infamous Trump-hater and lawyer to the “stars,” Michael Avenatti. Once considered little more than a minor thorn in Trump’s side, the self-proclaimed brawler has set his sights on the Democrat ticket in 2020.
Recent CNN polling puts Avenatti with just a 1% chance of securing the nomination 24 months out from the election, emboldening many to suggest his chances are not solid; yet as the man himself points out, Donald Trump had the same percentage with just 18 months to go before his 2016 win.
While Avenatti has successfully painted himself as a contender for the top spot, it seems highly unlikely that a man who has chased fortune for himself and his clients, sought celebrity, and generally played to the rougher side of politics, could really sell his brand to die hard socialists who see individual wealth as a sin.
Loose Coalition
Far from being a uniting force in politics, the present-day Democratic Party is spinning wildly into entropy. From the November 2016 Big Bang, this expansion of the Dem church has spiralled into disparate chaos and disorder that shows no sign of stopping. As warring tribes, all painted subtle shades of blue seek control of the party’s soul, one wonders if there will be enough left of the tattered and torn scraps remaining on which to write the name of the 2020 candidate.
The disingenuous media has implored time and time again for the country to unite. Whether this comes from a desire to sell airtime or from a genuine wish to see the country move forward as one, they have clearly not been paying attention.
The GOP and much of the country has been focusing on uniting; they have united behind the president and behind the global prosperity of the American people. It is the Democratic Party itself that is suffering from a fatal division. Traditional blue voters are left with a simple question: Do they vote for a party that is antithetical to their own beliefs or do they begin the slow process of healing the country and unite behind President Donald J. Trump.
