Nathan Wade has resigned as the lead prosecutor against Donald Trump in Georgia. Earlier in the day, Judge Scott McAfee of Fulton Superior Court admonished Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis for creating an “appearance of impropriety” and ruled that if Ms. Willis wanted to remain on the Trump case, Mr. Wade had to go. By resigning, Nathan Wade cleared her path.

Scandal has surrounded Ms. Willis’ case against Mr. Trump since her romantic relationship with Mr. Wade came to light – as did uncertainty. So far, the results have been a mixed bag for both Trump and Willis. The case stands, but minus six of the charges, which Judge McAfee ordered dropped Wednesday, and Mr. Wade. One might assume a good deal of the public trust in Ms. Willis and her case against the former president is now forfeit, as well.

Judge McAfee called dating the man she hired as a special prosecutor a “tremendous lapse in judgement,” but he stopped short of disqualifying Ms. Willis from continuing to do the job. In her acceptance of Mr. Wade’s resignation, Ms. Willis said: “I compliment you for the professionalism and dignity you have shown over the last 865 days, as you have endured threats against you and your family, as well as unjustified attacks in the media and in court on your reputation as a lawyer.”
