In a televised statement on August 10, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that he would resign from office, effective in 14 days.
During an emotional address, Cuomo described himself as a fighter but said he did not want to be the subject of a long and expensive distraction. The governor claimed that impeachment proceedings, which state lawmakers had threatened, were politically motivated. He did not devote any significant time to denials of the sexual harassment allegations made against him by 11 women.
Once a star of the Democratic Party, the governor had planned to run for a fourth term in 2022. He had reportedly offered to abandon his re-election bid in return for a pledge from state officials to shelve impeachment plans. The offer was swiftly rebuffed.
The Albany County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation of the governor, after receiving a criminal complaint from one of Cuomo’s accusers.
