The TwitterZone: Canada’s Own Rachel Dolezal

What is behind the rising incidence of woke transracialism?

Each week Liberty Nation straps on its Personal Protective Equipment and dives into the TwitterZone to bring you the biggest news, the most outlandish arguments, and the real Zeitgeist of what is taking place in the internet’s wildest frontier.

With all of Twitter focusing on the second impeachment of Donald Trump last week, other topics of interest were obscured. But one incident involving Canadian academia can provide a fresh dose of Twitter insanity.

Many Americans may remember the story of Rachel Dolezal, the former college professor, NAACP chapter president, and racial activist who gained notoriety in 2015 for portraying herself as a black woman despite her white race. Dolezal’s “transracial” identity helped prop her up as an authority on race relations and African Studies as a college instructor. Her claimed “blackness” validated her as a victim of white-on-black hate crimes, allegations that were never verified. Characterizing herself as a black woman experiencing racism and misogyny gave her “points” prized by the woke left, which is obsessed with intersectionality.

Canada finally has its own version of Dolezal. In February, an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia known as Dr. Amie Wolf was criticized for doxxing students for their supposed “white supremacist misogyny.” The victims were 12 Asian-Canadian female students who were fed up with Wolf’s unprofessional teaching and grading. The professor had pointed out that anyone with conservative views would fail her class, that she could not speak to German students on account of their race, and that any support for political parties other than the Green Party was equivalent to colonialism.

For obvious reasons, the 12 students requested a transfer to another section of the mandatory course, sparking Wolf to reveal the girls’ names and addresses on her Twitter account and leading many of her woke followers to harass and blacklist the students. News about the doxxing circulated on the University of British Columbia subreddit and eventually drew widespread attention on Twitter once pundits and others took note of the insanity going on in the North.

Observant critics scrutinizing Wolf’s history at the university eventually realized that her indigenous ancestry claims might be fabricated. Wolf had adopted an indigenous identity after allegedly discovering a Cree sister. She would later go on to claim to be Metis before finally asserting herself to be Mi’kmaq. Fellow Canadian academics dogpiled on the drama, with some rabidly defending Wolf until realizing the woke leftist professor may not be exactly as advertised. The moment Twitter jumped into the fray, Wolf lambasted her critics, erratically claiming she was being “raped on Reddit” just before deleting her Twitter account.

Many might ask: Why would an academic allegedly falsify her background in light of the damning accusations against her? Perhaps Wolf may share common ground with our very own Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who claimed a link to Native American ancestry throughout her entire career in academia until a DNA test proved otherwise. Perhaps Wolf believed that claiming indigenous ancestry would boost her career and amplify her voice over other academics. Many of those who initially supported Wolf backed off after reading reports about her alleged ethnic falsification. Sadly, had Wolf not been exposed for manipulating woke intersectionality, too many left-wing academics and like-minded peers may have had no problem with her doxxing behavior toward those 12 students.

How could such a person be allowed to teach at a distinguished university? The answer is obvious: Academia’s wokeness apparently amplified Wolf’s lackluster credentials because of her supposed indigenous ancestry. Being granted “oppressed” points for her supposed ethnic background gave her the credibility needed to teach about indigenous groups in Canada. An absurd interaction started by the professor on Twitter led to this disaster. These events will likely prove to be another case study of woke social justice warriors identifying as minority groups they are not part of to insulate themselves from the standards and professional requirements reserved for others.
