Immigration Roundup: Mexico Deports Illegals to Slow Coronavirus

The left says deporting illegals makes Trump a bigot – but it’s okay for Mexico?

Editor’s note: When it comes to immigration – illegal or otherwise – the American people have a right to be concerned. Each week, Liberty Nation author Kelli Ballard will examine a contentious issue related to today’s hottest topic.

Immigration is not only a hot topic for liberals and Democratic candidates; it is also at the forefront during the Coronavirus pandemic. When President Donald Trump early on during the COVID-19 crisis stopped travel from China into the U.S. and then closed the country’s southern and northern borders, he was called a racist. Yet that very action likely saved countless lives and helped to reduce the spread of the novel virus. Now, the commander in chief is getting even more flak because of the proclamation he recently signed restricting immigration for 60 days. Mexico, on the other hand, has already deported nearly all of its illegal immigrants. Where are the cries of injustice for that?

Over the past five weeks, Mexico has been deporting its illegal immigrants and now has a little more than 100 people still remaining at the migrant centers. Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) said that since March 21, the country had removed immigrants from 65 of its government facilities, a move the organization claimed was part of following health and safety guidelines set forth for the Coronavirus outbreak. In March, there were 3,759 immigrants being housed, but then 3,653 were deported to Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, shrinking that number down to 106 people still illegally in the country. The remaining individuals are waiting on asylum decisions or judicial hearings, and some have asked permission to stay and await answers.

Mexico’s deportation efforts are to reduce health risks. Trump’s are three-fold: to stop the spread of COVID-19, to continue his strict immigration control policies, and to help Americans find work once the country starts reopening.

Liberty Nation’s Mark Angelides said:

“It has been argued that large-scale immigration compresses wages, especially for those who work in the low-skill sector; an influx of new migrants competing for jobs as the economy reopens would almost certainly depress earning potential for those in the direst of straits. But does the proclamation go far enough to make a significant difference?”

Others argue immigrants – even those in the U.S. illegally – are needed even more now than ever before because of the pandemic crisis. Some state governors have even worked payments to illegals into their budgets, such as California’s Democratic governor Gavin Newsom, whose plan provides about 150,000 adults $500 each. Newsome explained his reasoning:

“We feel a deep sense of gratitude for people who are in fear of deportations but are still addressing essential needs of tens of millions of Californians. This is a state that steps up always to support those in need, regardless of status.”

Farmers are letting their crops go because there are not enough people to work the fields, or such is the claim. In Delaware and Maryland, there are farms that are going to slaughter up to two million chickens because there are not enough workers to take care of the fowl. These are some of the reasons the left is justifying their bid to let illegal aliens remain in the country.

Does Mexico have the right idea? That all depends on who you ask. But liberals are quick to portray Trump’s immigration acts as political moves. They say he’s taking advantage of the crisis to further his racist agenda. Never mind that the U.S. economy is struggling to stay afloat and the American people are fighting to put food on the table. When other countries deport their illegals, it is considered smart and necessary. But it’s different here; in the U.S. it’s blatant bigotry. The left’s absolute hatred for our president blinds them from seeing anything positive.
