Los Angeles Sex Task Force Update

by | Nov 27, 2017 | Law

The Sex Crimes Task Force initiated just days ago by Los Angeles County district attorney Jackie Lacey has two dozen cases, out of 30 complaints, in review.  As suspected, many Hollywood heavy hitters have made the list as alleged victims are flooding social media with accusations.

The allegations encompass a wide range of punishable crimes from misdemeanor sexual battery to felony rape.  As accusations continue to pour into LAPD Sex Crimes Department and expected to continue, the number of investigations is likely to rise in unheard of proportions.

One official confirmed there are several people with numerous complainants, and we can surmise those special few are Harvey Weinstein and his rehab roomie Kevin Spacey.

Limitations

Although half of the files are beyond the statute of limitations for prosecutorial purposes, investigators are compiling the information for use in altering sex crimes’ laws:

“California dropped the statute of limitations on several sex crimes, including rape and child molestation, in 2016 in the wake of sexual assault allegations against comedian Bill Cosby.”

This is excellent news for victims who were afraid to come forward out of fear or embarrassment, but the laws are not retroactive.  If the crime was committed 20 years ago, that is the statute by which the judicial system must follow.  Other states have lengthened or doubled the time a victim is allotted to come forward, but California is the first to remove limitations entirely on rape.

The Bad News

Prosecutors say they have yet to review a case that warrants charges.  Perhaps LA should scrutinize how New York City is chasing down Harvey Weinstein.  They left no stone unturned in their quest to dethrone the movie mogul, and no amount of sex rehab in Arizona will save Uncle Harvey:

Police officials in New York have already said that a rape allegation against film producer Harvey Weinstein, who has seen more than 85 women accuse him of sexual misconduct, is “credible.” They are collecting more evidence to build the case.

“We have an actual case here,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce told reporters earlier this month.”

How The Scene Will Play Out

America is experiencing a wave of sexual counter-culturalism that once unwound, will alter the way we perceive common and casual interactions, and with those people in powerful, professional circumstances.   One wonders if this will translate on the big and small screens or if Hollywood will replace the pervs with other star-makers, and close ranks to outsiders.  It seems the feminist TV lawyer Gloria Allred is well on her way to eradicating any men in journalism and entertainment one touchy-feely moment at a time.

But here’s the rub for the rest of us; will simple communications become a treacherous water to navigate until we settle into a new norm that we are designing today? For the vast majority of Americans who aren’t sexual criminals, who may have a raunchy interchange of words now and again, and hurt someone’s feelings, where does that leave them?  Let’s face it; we opened the floodgates, and the torrent will not allow us back upstream.  Strap on the life vest, pull up your big people pants and ride the wave to the shore.

We will keep you posted on the progress of the LA Sex Crimes Task Force and the Hollywood weirdos.
