We all have our favorite Christmas movies and songs, but before film and sound recordings were invented, people had to rely more on the printed word to communicate their feelings about the season. In order to embrace the centuries of tradition, LN presents four poems, each one chosen to represent a different aspect of Christmas.

What better choice to begin than a retelling of the reason for Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ? Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) was a Missouri-born American poet known for her classical style. Here, she provides a straightforward yet elegant account of the biblical tale.

All dressed in ermine fine;
They bore Him gold and chrysoprase,
And gifts of precious wine.
The shepherds came from out the north,

They brought Him little new-born lambs—

For a change of pace, next is a poem honoring the age-old traditions that were eventually appropriated by an expanding Christian authority in order to appeal to a pagan audience. As recently described by LN’s Onar Åm, Yule is an ancient festival that celebrates the winter solstice and is still observed by neo-pagans today. Although the tradition of the Yule log has unclear origins, it was perhaps begun by Celtic Druids, who would collect a log and burn it over the midwinter in order to bring light and luck.
The ashes of the log are considered lucky and a piece of this year’s log should be kept and burned next year. For Christians, the burning of the log came to symbolize – depending which source you consult – the need to keep stable warm during Jesus’s birth, the eternal battle between good and evil, or the triumph of Christ over sin.
While the burning of a log has fallen out of fashion in most Christmas celebrations, in some countries you can still find a chocolate “Yule log” dessert made to resemble part of a tree, during the holiday season. This poem was written by Robert Herrick, a 17th-century poet and ordained vicar known for marrying pagan and Christian themes in his writing; he would have celebrated Christmas with a Yule log, as the Christmas tree had not yet been introduced to the English tradition.

Helen Maria Williams was a British writer and translator who lived much of her life in Paris – even being imprisoned there during the French revolution. Williams, who must have felt acute homesickness at certain trying times, provides in this poem a simple yet delightful description of how the small things can make a big difference. Gifts don’t need to be extravagant or costly to bring joy to a loved one and this poem brings to life the old ideas that indeed “it’s the thought that counts” and that a life is made of memories, rather than things.

“Peace on Earth, good will to men.” Is any phrase more synonymous with the meaning of Christmas?
It is taken from the Gospel of Luke 2:14, which describes angels appearing before the shepherds to deliver news of the birth of Christ. Translated in the King James Bible, the full phrase given by the heavenly host of angels is “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men” – a more charitable translation than some grant.
In this 1863 poem, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow incorporates the quote to deliver a message of hope for humanity, even for those who previously had none. Writing during the American Civil War, Longfellow must well have questioned whether peace on Earth could ever exist.
In 1872, the poem was adapted to create the song “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” which eventually became a hit for Bing Crosby in 1956.
