BREAKING: Senators Reach Agreement on Gun Legislation

Senate likely to vote on bipartisan gun bill.

On Sunday morning, June 12, a group of 20 US senators announced that they had reached a deal on a package of reforms to federal gun regulations. The 10 Democrats and 10 Republicans agreed to move on legislation that would increase the scrutiny of gun buyers under the age of 21 and provide extra money to states for the implementation of red flag laws, more mental health treatment, and to beef up security for schools.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is on board and, with 10 GOP senators willing to back the bill, it is likely to pass in the upper chamber. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) indicated that he intends to quickly bring it to the floor for a vote.

“Our plan saves lives while also protecting the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans. We look forward to earning broad, bipartisan support and passing our commonsense proposal into law,” a statement from the group of negotiators said.
