Breaking: No More Afghan Allies to be Evacuated?

Americans, NATO passport holders, and green card holders only as deadline looms.

Reports suggest that in the run-up to the Aug. 31 deadline given by the Taliban for all U.S. forces to be out of Afghanistan, the order has been given to prioritize American citizens, holders of passports from NATO countries, and those with processed green cards. What this means for the estimated 20,000 Afghans who are in a precarious position due to their association with the United States is unclear; the Daily Mail reports that they will not be allowed to board a plane.

The already difficult situation is exacerbated by a poor administrative decision from the U.S. State Department, which issued essentially blank (nameless) Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) via smartphones. These recipients took screenshots of the digital visas and shared them with friends, family, and associates, causing a mass rush to the airport and thousands of people boarding flights.

How these individuals will be tracked down also has not been made clear.

With President Joe Biden insisting that all those who require evacuation will be helped, it seems that either he will fail in this promise or be forced to come to an arrangement with the Taliban. During the G7 meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 24, it is expected the U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson will attempt to pressure Biden to push for more time.
