Breaking: Taliban Awaits Transfer of Power in Kabul

With reports that the Afghan president is ready to resign, the Taliban is preparing to take over.

According to numerous regional sources, the president of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, will soon tender his resignation and begin the handover of power to the Taliban. The Khaama Press Agency reports that negotiations are taking place in the Afghan Presidential Palace and that former Interior Minister Ali Ahmad Jalali (a U.S. citizen since 1987 and a Maryland resident) will be appointed to head the interim government.

Ghani released a video statement soon after the Taliban forces began entering Kabul, in which he said, “It is our responsibility, and we will do it in the best possible manner. Anyone who thinks about chaos, plunder, or looting will be tackled with force.” Taliban fighters then stood down as a delegation was reported to have made its way to the palace.

Al Arabiya TV reports that “Afghan President Ashraf Ghani intends to step down today, Sunday,” and that “The process of transferring power will take place today in the presidential palace.”

With many foreigners, press,  and locals fleeing the city, up-to-date information from reliable sources is limited.
