The House Homeland Security Committee announced Friday that Republicans and Democrats have reached an agreement on the parameters of a bipartisan commission to investigate the alleged attempted insurrection of Jan. 6.
Reportedly, the 10-member body will be made up of five Republicans and five Democrats. The commission’s chairperson will be a Democrat and the vice-chair a Republican. A final report must be completed by Dec. 31, 2021. “[W]e owe it to the Capitol police and all who enter our citadel of democracy to investigate the attack,” House Homeland Security Chair Benny Thompson (D-MS) said in a statement.
The 9/11-style commission will have the power to issue subpoenas, but they must be approved by both the chair and vice-chair or by a majority vote of all 10 members.
