Culture Corner: Jordan Peterson on the Bible – A New Perspective

Looking at the impact of the Bible from a different angle.

One of the most fascinating YouTube series available today also happens to be in the form many people dread. Professor Jordan B. Peterson’s lecture series on the Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories should be a disaster; it is a composite of every cliché we are warned the modern age rejects.

Peterson gives content-heavy lectures, no slide show or graphics, no guest speakers, just 40 hours of his thoughts in language that requires serious attention. And it is wonderful.

We often consume podcasts and videos that do not force us to think, but this series sets the mind racing. Each point is a segue into a realm of thought that makes you want to do research. Whether it’s where dreams come from, how acting morally serves us well, or discussing why the Bible has survived when even empires have fallen, Peterson grabs your attention and encourages you to think more.

If I have one complaint about this series, it is that — unlike other audio series — you can’t listen while doing other things. You may find yourself “rewinding” to better understand one of the thousands of interesting facts or themes that arise.

This is not a series aimed at any one group, Christians or atheists, or anyone in between; it is aimed at people who love to be challenged to think and who have an interest in how we, as humans, have arrived at the point we are now today.
