The news you need - ready to go!

Welcome to Liberty Nation’s Daily Snapshot. All the top news of the day, the latest polls, and more.

What’s happening in the political sphere – the hot stories making the news today.

  • During a heated back-and-forth on Twitter, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) dared acting Director of National Intelligence, Richard Grenell, to release the transcripts of telephone conversations between Michael Flynn and former Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Grenell’s response? “Those are coming. It’s very important for the public to see ALL of them. For too long the public has been misled. Just compare your committee’s transcripts to your public statements!”
  • Certain states appear to be dragging their feet when it comes to allowing houses of worship to reopen, even as much of the country tries to return to normal. On May 22, President Trump called upon state governors to allow churches and other places of worship to open, declaring them “essential places that provide essential services.” The president even threatened to overrule governors who refused, though it is not entirely clear what legal authority he has in this regard.
  • Joe Biden is already in damage control mode over his ill-conceived remark to a black radio talk-show host, during a May 22 interview, that “if you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.” Coming from anyone outside of the Democratic Party, such a statement would be career-ending. Biden fell back on folksy, though, and claimed he was being “a wise guy.” His party and its media lackeys will give him a pass, of course – as they always do.

The latest polls and trends impacting the United States.

  • Roughly one-quarter of Americans believe that the number of fatalities related to Coronavirus is due mostly to the government’s poor policy decisions. About one-third of Americans say the unemployment situation is similarly due to bad policy. Of course, this also means that a majority of Americans attribute neither the death toll from the virus nor the job losses to government mismanagement.
  • Do Americans approve of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic? 47% of Americans rated the U.S. response as “good” or “excellent.” 66% of Americans approved of the South Korean response, while the same percentage similarly rated the German response. No explanation was given as to how so many Americans became intimately familiar with measures taken in the latter two countries.
  • President Trump recently authorized across-the-board slashing of regulations. The move will help small businesses recover from the Coronavirus shutdown. 58% of likely U.S. voters approve of the measure, while just 26% are opposed to cutting regulations. As expected, the majority of Republican and unaffiliated voters approve, while most Democrat voters do not agree.

Something political to ponder as you enjoy your morning coffee.

With some justification, the president’s supporters have long suspected that his critics oppose everything Trump says and does, merely because orange man bad. Just one example is the case of vicious terrorist killer Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, who was virtually canonized by certain media outlets after the president green-lighted a special forces operation in which the former ISIS leader was killed. The Washington Post described Al Baghdadi as an “austere religious scholar.” Trump Derangement Syndrome may now have reached a whole new level of irrationality, though. Reuters reports that a recent survey revealed: “Some 36% of respondents said they would be less willing to take a [COVID-19] vaccine if U.S. President Donald Trump said it was safe.” One is sorely tempted to imagine the reaction to a solemn statement from the president that diving head-first from the roof of a 10-story building was an extremely bad idea.

A thought for the day from history’s most interesting thinkers.

I prefer the tumult of liberty to the quiet of servitude.
