Liberty Nation: Daily Snapshot – 5.7.20

The news you need - ready to go!

Welcome to Liberty Nation’s Daily Snapshot. All the top news of the day, the latest polls, and more.

What’s happening in the political sphere – the hot stories making the news today.

  • Due to a lack of information regarding the longterm effects of the Coronavirus, the military might not allow COVID-19 survivors to enlist.
  • The bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus plans to hold a “virtual Congress” on Thursday, providing lawmakers with the chance to remotely debate the next major Coronavirus relief package.
  • Joe Biden says he’ll reverse the new DeVos rule bolstering protections for those accused of campus sexual assault. Given that he thought he was running for Senate not long ago, it’s unlikely the former vice president is aware of the irony.
  • Sinclair Broadcast Group agreed to pay a $48 million fine to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to settle three open investigations. It will be the largest fine in the history of the FCC.

The latest polls and trends impacting the United States.

  • 43% of all likely voters favor a policy that would reduce federal aid to states and cities that provide sanctuary for illegal immigrants. Just as many (43%) are opposed, while 14% are undecided.
  • Hispanics (20%) are nearly twice as likely as whites (11%) to have lost their jobs amid the Coronavirus shutdowns, according to a Washington Post-Ipsos poll.
  • 35% of American voters think the country is heading in the right direction.
  • 26% of Democratic voters who were shown a 35-second video clip of Joe Biden’s unequivocal denial that he sexually assaulted Tara Reade, a former Senate staffer, want the apparent nominee to be replaced by someone else, according to a Morning Consult poll.

Something political to ponder as you enjoy your morning coffee.

In normal times, the FDA approves tests for illnesses based on evidence of accuracy. But, under the urgency of the pandemic, the FDA temporarily lifted the requirement that tests be validated before they are marketed. The FDA website shows that, to date, they have temporarily approved Coronavirus testing for 84 different labs and companies. There were 14 new approvals in the last week alone and more than 400 more applications are waiting for FDA’s review. Unfortunately, none of the tests currently available – not the 84 that are approved and not the other 400 that likely soon will be — have a record of proven accuracy that can be independently verified. What does this mean for all the COVID-19 stats folks currently rely on?

A thought for the day from history’s most interesting thinkers.

Reporters thrive on the world’s misfortune. For this reason they often take an indecent pleasure in events that dismay the rest of humanity.
