The news you need - ready to go!

Welcome to Liberty Nation’s Daily Snapshot. All the top news of the day, the latest polls, and more.

What’s happening in the political sphere – the hot stories making the news today.

  • According to White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, President Trump is considering using phase four of the Coronavirus financial assistance plan to pressure states that provide sanctuary to illegal aliens. “I don’t want to get ahead of negotiations,” McEnany told reporters on May 1, “but want to emphasize [the president] has mentioned sanctuary cities.”
  • House Republicans might not participate in the select committee supposedly created to oversee Coronavirus stimulus spending. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has been critical of Democrats’ motives for wanting to create the panel, describing it as “another impeachment committee.”
  • There is a Postal Preservation Caucus on Capitol Hill because Congress doesn’t already have enough of its own little special interest groups. It is a bipartisan caucus whose leaders fear that the United States Postal Service “could cease to function by this summer” if it is not bailed out. The Postal Service is asking for $25 billion in emergency funding. This agency has become famous for losing money hand over fist and is, perhaps, the prime example of why the practice of governments attempting to run businesses should be stamped out altogether.

The latest polls and trends impacting the United States.

  • Thirty-three percent of Americans believe they might have had Coronavirus. 13% said they “probably” or “definitely” had it. Since only a small percentage of those people, 9%, said they had been tested, there’s no way of knowing if they are correct in their suspicions. If it was indeed true, though, that one-third of the population has, at some point, already been infected, it makes one wonder whether the nationwide shutdown had any point at all.
  • According to a new USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll, 50% of Americans think the government should do more to solve the country’s problems, while 40% said it is trying to do too much. In September 2019, a small majority of Americans said the government was trying to do too much. It seems, then, that the COVID-19 pandemic has convinced a lot of people that the government doesn’t do enough to protect them. The last time so many Americans favored more government control was after September 11, 2001.
  • Do Americans pay too much in taxes? 46% say yes, while 48% think the amount they pay is “about right.” The number of Americans who think they pay too much to the government has dropped a total of 12 percentage points since Donald Trump took office.

Something political to ponder as you enjoy your morning coffee.

There’s just no getting away from the fact that Joe Biden is becoming an albatross around the neck of the Democratic Party. The reality of the situation is that he is going to receive his party’s nomination unless someone persuades him to withdraw his name from consideration. Is that likely? It may have been before Tara Reade stepped into the spotlight. The former vice president always seemed something of a reluctant candidate, and he could so easily have withdrawn, citing family issues or health issues. Regardless of ideology or the fact that the man is Washington Swamp politics personified, life has put Biden through the wringer, in certain respects. No-one would have criticized him for throwing in the towel.

It’s too late now, though, because to withdraw at this point would tempt too many people to conclude that Reade’s graphic and sickening tale of sexual assault must have been true – whether that is the case or not. So, with Ukraine, Burisma, Reade, and apparent mental deterioration hanging over his head, Biden will limp on until November. Little wonder that Democrats are desperate to finish off this wounded economy and have the next election decided by anonymous mail-in ballots from who knows where.

A thought for the day from history’s most interesting thinkers.

I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.

– Barry Goldwater
