Gunslingers for Liberty: Impeachment Derails Dems – 12.22.19

Major impeachment backfire derails Democrat hopes for 2020.

Impeachment Fails to Land

Almost entirely along party lines, Democrats voted to impeach President Trump. Why then are they not basking in the celebration of a three-year mission come to fruition? Since the day Trump won the election, pundits and politicians have been pushing the idea that the president-elect would face impeachment, initially for colluding with Russia, then for speaking informally to Russian diplomats, then for the Stormy Daniels mess, and, finally, this supposed Quid Pro Quo with Ukraine.

It seems that after all this effort and a huge number of false alarms, now that impeachment has been voted on by the House, there should be a sense of accomplishment in the party ranks … but there isn’t. In fact, it seems more that now they have arrived at the pool, they’ve discovered they left their swim shorts at home.

Could it be partly to do with Trump’s own reaction to the vote? Liberty Nation’s Graham J. Noble covered the event, writing:

As voting was underway, the president was speaking at a rally in Battle Creek, Michigan, where he told the crowd: “[I]t doesn’t really feel like we’re being impeached.” As the final vote tally came in, Trump proudly noted that not a single Republican voted for either of the two articles. “The Republican Party has never been so affronted,” he told an applauding crowd, “but they have never been so united as they are now.”

And now that the House has voted for the articles of impeachment, why then are Democrats not racing over to the Senate skipping, jumping, and singing that they have dethroned the king?

What to Watch For

In the recent Democrat debate, the candidates (not including Andrew Yang), seemed thrilled that “justice had been done” regarding president trump. If they are so sure of his guilt, and of the clarity of their argument, are they still suggesting that they will each be the one to beat Trump in 2020?

Gleeful Reactions

Instead of bemoaning their fate, cursing their president, and sobbing about the House voting to impeach Donald Trump, Senate Republicans seemed almost jubilant at the news. Most likely this is because, in a majority Democrat House, Senate Republicans have been left twiddling their thumbs unable to really get involved. That twiddling has now turned to gleeful hand-rubbing as they eagerly await the articles to be delivered to the upper chamber. Yet this may not happen as soon as we think.

Already, Democrats (surely aware that their moment in the spotlight is over), are making clear to all who will listen that it is their decision “when,” and even “if,” they choose to move proceedings along. Why the trepidation? Senate Leader Mitch McConnell has been involved in a long-running psychological warfare campaign with Democrats designed to make them fear getting started on an impeachment trial. From threatening to call Hunter Biden, Joe Biden, and Adam Schiff to the witness stand, through to suggesting they may just have a vote straight away and be done with it, each move is calculated to let nancy Pelosi know that she will no longer have any control over events.

As Liberty Nation’s Tim Donner presciently wrote last month:

“Trump and his allies have been forced to absorb relentless, scurrilous attacks and spectacular, unsubstantiated allegations as long as the president has occupied the Oval Office, and a prospective Senate trial will provide them the perfect platform to seek their well-earned revenge. Just imagine the witnesses they could call, and their chance to explore substantiated narratives left unexplored by the left’s handmaidens in the media.”

This fits in with the words of Josh Holmes, a GOP strategist, who tweeted, “Folks, this might be the greatest compliment McConnell has ever received. They are seriously entertaining holding a grenade with the pin pulled rather than facing what happens when they send it over McConnell’s wall.”

Having gotten what they have lusted after for three years, it seems Democrats are now too timid to actually bring the whole thing home.

What to Watch For

We can realistically expect Democrats to spend as much time as possible before finally letting the matter go to a Senate trial. As soon as the trial begins, they become as irrelevant as Republicans were during the House hearings. The only way to scratch a win is to make this last until late October and hope that the public isn’t bored to tears by that time.

Washington Whispers & Other Juicy Tidbits

Be on the lookout for:

  • There is a rumor floating around the Swamp that instead of taking part in media-organized debates, President Trump may decide to host his own discussion platform, inviting the Democrat contenders. Will anyone be brave enough to take the bait?
  • Be prepared to see leading Senate Republicans publically calling on Democrats to get started on the impeachment trial. The longer Democrats leave it, the weaker they will seem to the voting public.
