Build America Visa: Will a Good Idea Die over Dems’ Hate for Trump?

Trump’s “Build America Visa” system would allow more immigrants in at a faster pace – if they meet the standard, that is.

President Donald Trump announced a new immigration approach on May 16. However, Democrats are sure to stomp it out of existence because the one thing it doesn’t address is the DACA program, one of the biggest sources of animosity between the two parties. The “Build America Visa” plan addresses a lot of problematic issues, including a merit-based program to help bring in talented and skilled immigrants.

The president gave the details of the proposed plan during an event in the White House Rose Garden. “Our proposal is pro-American, pro-immigrant, and pro-worker,” he said. “It’s just common sense.”

The Plan Revealed

A Trump immigration reform wouldn’t be genuine if it didn’t call for a border wall, and this one does. The proposal asks for infrastructure in 33 strategic locations – in other words, a wall. Other plans of attack include updating and modernizing ports of entry and fast-tracking immigration court proceedings as well as the removal processes.

And where are we going to get the moolah to pay for all of this, you ask? Trump’s plan includes a “border security trust fund,” which will fill the coffers with funds collected from border crossings. Asylum seekers were also addressed, with the president promising legitimate claims will be accepted. “If you have a proper claim you will be quickly admitted,” he said. “If you don’t, you will promptly be returned home.” Although, he didn’t specify how the quicker process would work.

Building our economy is a top priority, and one of the plans Trump has is to increase the number of visas to be given to immigrants. This, he notes, will be on a merit-system, the “Build America Visa” program. The idea is to attract more migrants that are younger, already have an offer of employment, possess advanced education, and can offer valuable skills. Under this initiative, Trump said the proportion of visas going to the highly-skilled and desirable immigrants will jump from 12% to 57%.

“Random selection is contrary to American values and blocks out many qualified potential immigrants from around the world,” Trump said. “This will bring us in line with other countries and make us globally competitive.”

But being skilled alone will not guarantee an immigrant a visa, there are some other qualifications that must first be met. Applicants will be required to speak English. They will also have to be financially able to care for themselves,  and pass a civics exam. The president referred to this program as an “easy-to-navigate points-based system.”

Sounds reasonable, right? Even so, be prepared for liberals and Dems to pick the proposed legislation to pieces, refusing to agree with anything just because it was suggested by someone they can’t stand.
