The Department of Justice (DOJ) has assembled a team of investigators to look into the school shooting that occurred in Uvalde, Texas, late last month. It is expected that federal authorities will investigate the response of local law enforcement to the assault and determine how the police can handle these situations more effectively in the future. But, regardless of what the DOJ finds, it is sure to become yet another political football in the leadup to the congressional elections.
According to ABC News, the DOJ’s objective in reviewing the tragedy will be to “provide an independent account of law enforcement actions and responses, identify lessons learned and best practices to help first responders prepare for and respond to active shooter events, and provide a roadmap for community safety and engagement before, during and after such incidents.”
US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced plans for the investigation on June 8. He explained that the review team would speak with a “wide variety” of stakeholders, including local police, government officials, school staff, witnesses, the victims’ families, and members of the community. He told reporters that the city’s mayor assured him the local government would be transparent.
“As I said, we’ve been invited by the mayor, we have been promised, assured and welcomed with respect to cooperation at every level of law enforcement – state, federal and local – and we’ll participate in that vein,” Garland said. “We don’t expect any problems.”
The attorney general characterized the DOJ’s impending investigation as a “critical incident review.” The department took the same steps after mass shootings in Orlando, Florida, and San Bernadino, California. The review will “give guidance for the future” to minimize the impact of such incidents.

“Nothing that these [investigators] can do can undo the terrible tragedy that occurred, and that we are just heartbroken about,” Garland said. “But we can assess what happened and we can make recommendations for the future.”
Garland also indicated that the DOJ would be involved in hammering out bipartisan gun control measures. He said the department is “ready to participate to support the bipartisan gun safety negotiations” that are being held between Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Chris Murphy (D-CT).
The DOJ’s investigation has not yet begun, but the findings are likely destined to be weaponized by gun-grabbers. Garland’s nod towards helping to craft gun control policy might just provide a clue as to how the results of the probe will be used. The anti-gunner crowd has already suggested the performance of the police is somehow proof that good men with guns are not as effective at stopping mass shootings as banning AR-15s and raising the legal age to purchase a firearm. While the probe might yield important insight as to how to prevent these tragedies in the future, it will almost certainly be used to push an anti-gun agenda.
