Cancel culture has been all the rage for the past five years, and the furor over the societal trend is not settling down. It has become one of the hard left’s most cherished and valuable weapons to silence the expression of political opinions that violate the precepts of wokeism. As cancellation becomes more prevalent and targets non-celebrities, some who reject this trend have sought ways to push back against the pernicious impact it has on everyday people.
Helen Pluckrose, an author and former academic, became known after joining scholars James Lindsay and Peter Boghossian in crafting false scientific studies based on absurd subjects, such as rape culture among dogs and other topics three years ago. She recently launched Counterweight, a support group for individuals who have been on the wrong end of a cancel culture campaign at their jobs or elsewhere.
On its website, the group refers to itself as “the home of scholarship and advice on Critical Social Justice ideology.” The organization exists to connect people “with the resources, advice and guidance” they might need to deal with situations involving hard leftist ideology.
Pluckrose told Olga Khazan, who wrote extensively in The Atlantic about Counterweight, that she “hears from three or four people a day who have ‘been disciplined, or [are] being forced to affirm beliefs that they don’t have about race or about gender.’”
