Since rapper Kanye West launched his Twitter rebellion against the left, many conservatives have voiced their support. Indeed, while they knew that West was not coming out as a conservative, they appreciated his willingness to challenge the conventional thinking of black Americans when it comes to the Democratic Party.
Right wingers have applauded the entertainer for encouraging blacks to think for themselves rather than simply believing what the left is telling them to believe. West also used one of the most popular forms of imagery that conservatives use to describe black America’s attachment to the Democratic Party.
He referred to it as a “plantation.” It’s a metaphor that many conservatives have used in similar types of arguments, but the image it conjures does not accurately describe the real issue. Indeed, the analogy is demeaning to modern blacks as well as actual slaves.
What Is The Democrat Plantation?
Both black and white conservatives have likened the black community’s relationship to the Democrats to that of a slave and his master. When a black person rejects the left’s ideology, he is said to have left the plantation — similar to runaway slaves fleeing their bondage.
The analogy is understandable. The Democrats are the party of slavery and Jim Crow. However, this metaphor isn’t entirely accurate or helpful.
This Isn’t Slavery; It Is Deception
Blacks who vote Democrats are nothing like slaves. Slavery, by its nature, is forced labor. The worker does not choose to be ruled by his master — he is compelled by threat of violence. This is not so with black Democrats.
The left is not forcing blacks to lend them their support. Sure, they will use tactics such as name-calling and other means to punish those who reject their ideas. But they do this to everyone who disagrees with them.
Minorities do not reflexively support Democrats because they are being compelled, they make a conscious choice — one that can be reversed. The reason they choose the Democratic Party is that they have been deceived.
The left has successfully persuaded blacks to believe in their message of victimhood. They perpetuate the myth that the United States is a racist country that hates black people. They do the same with other minorities. Indeed, they present this message to anyone that is not a white Christian male. In this way, they have “earned” and retained the black vote.
The left retains the black vote by convincing them that they cannot succeed without the government. They enact policies and support causes that keep blacks in poverty and subject to violence. They then offer these policies as a false solution which will only be available if we give them our votes. In this way, they are infecting minorities with poison and then passing off this deadly mixture as the antidote. In exchange for our votes, they give us more snake oil; and the process repeats itself during each election cycle.
Blacks and other minorities are not slaves on a leftist plantation. They are people who have allowed themselves to become prisoners in a fortress built on a sturdy foundation of deceit. Many blacks are not genuine leftists. They have the same conservative values as other Americans — and yet they vote for a party that does not espouse these values. This is not due to slavery — it is because the left has convinced them that they are helpless victims in need of rescue.
Slaves are unable to choose freedom without risking their lives or well-being. Today, there are no whips, guns, or other means of keeping blacks in line. Instead, the Democrats use deceptive messages of victimhood and oppression to persuade us into supporting their ideology. There is only one way to break this cycle. As conservatives, we must stop using worthless analogies and start telling it like it is.
Truth Will Bring About Freedom
It is important that we frame the relationship between blacks and the Democrats accurately. Words matter. While conjuring images of slaves on a plantation might elicit certain emotions and provide us with a sense of righteousness, it does not adequately encapsulate what is really happening here.
Since most black Americans have many of the same values as conservatives, there isn’t much of a need to persuade them that conservative ideology is superior. Instead, we must highlight how the Democratic Party does not truly embrace these values. When communicating with blacks and other types of people that the left targets, we must expose the fact that the left’s ideology has not produced any positive results.
Fortunately, it really isn’t hard to remove the veil that conceals the true face of the left. Indeed, Kanye West may have accidentally stumbled upon a solution. When it comes to black Americans and other minorities, the best thing that conservatives can do is to ask a simple question: what have the Democrats done for you?
I have asked this question of minorities several times. I have not been given much of an answer. It’s not surprising. The cities in which blacks are suffering the most are run by Democrats. The objective in asking this question isn’t to get them to become conservatives; the goal is to arouse doubts about the party they have supported for decades.
Most conservatives understand why Kanye West’s recent tweets are important. It’s not because they think that West has suddenly become a right winger. It’s because he is encouraging black Americans to think outside of the political dogma that has been foisted upon them for decades. He is not saying that all black Americans should become Republicans — he is just letting them know that they do not have to be Democrats.
This is a starting point.
When black Americans are willing to question the reasons why they vote Democrat, it gives conservatives an opportunity to have their ideas heard. For now, that’s what we need if we are going to convert a significant chunk of one of the Democratic Party’s most important voting groups.
