In a not-so-surprising display of utter hypocrisy, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has called on Speaker of the House Paul Ryan to divulge the contents of the Republicans new health care law before it is passed. Yes, you read that right. Pelosi now believes that Americans deserve to know what is in the healthcare bill before Congress passes it.
On Tuesday, March 7th, Pelosi penned a letter to the Speaker of the House asking for more information on the Republicans’ effort to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. In this letter, Pelosi wrote:
The GOP legislation will have life or death consequences for tens of millions of families across America, and extraordinary impacts on state and federal budgets long into the future.
The American people and Members have a right to know the full impact of this legislation before any vote in Committee or by the whole House.
Members must not be asked to vote on this legislation before the CBO and the Joint Committee on Taxation have answered the following questions about your legislation in 2018 and 2019, over the 10-year budget window, and in the decade after: How will this bill measure up to the Affordable Care Act and current Medicaid law on coverage, quality, and cost? And how will it impact Medicare solvency?
…Mr. Speaker, as a former Chair of both the Committee on Ways and Means and the Budget, you understand the importance of having the numbers as well as anyone. These are critical questions and I hope that Republicans will honor their responsibility to the American people both before the Committees vote and before the final bill goes to the House floor.
Seems reasonable, right? Well, maybe not. Let’s get in the proverbial Delorean and take a little trip back in time. At the 2010 Legislative Conference for the National Association of Counties, then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: “But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of controversy.” Of course, this invited much criticism. In a piece for the Daily Signal, Marguerite Bowling wrote:
Ordinary Americans have had a common-sense resistance to Washington’s feverish attempt to overhaul one-sixth of the U.S. economy. But Congressional leadership has ignored the public’s concerns and instead clung to the idea that if they simply ram the bill through the legislative process — using unprecedented tactical maneuvers that may not even pass the parliamentarian’s smell test—Americans will finally understand and embrace ObamaCare.
It appears the former Speaker of the House finally come to her senses. She now understands the importance of transparency in regards to passing laws that impact millions of Americans.
Doubtful.
This is obviously motivated by Pelosi’s desire to help her party obstruct anything the Republican party does. It is not about the American people. It is about the fact that the Democrats want to protect former President Barack Obama’s failing healthcare law.
Pelosi’s letter is indicative of the rank hypocrisy the Democratic party has consistently demonstrated since President Donald Trump was elected. They have opposed his every move. They have blasted his every statement. They have tried to block the nomination of almost all of his cabinet appointments.
When President Obama took office, the Democrats impugned Republicans for resisting him. They labeled the Republicans the “Party of No.” But the Democrats have taken this a step further. Their willingness to engage in this type of hypocrisy is only going to alienate them further.
Americans do not want the Democrats to continue their obstructionism. The Hill recently reported that 73% of Americans want to see the Democrats work with President Trump. It is not reasonable to expect the Democrats to compromise with the President on every single issue. However, If the Democrats want to retain some semblance of relevancy, they need to be willing to work with President Trump and the Republicans in Congress instead of resisting them at every turn. Unfortunately, the left’s actions are showing that this is not likely to happen.
