COVID-19 fatigue is spreading in the United States. After months of lockdowns, business closures, and mask mandates, most Americans are just glad to take their vaccines and return to their everyday lives. However, as usual, groups intent on politicizing the pandemic even further have concocted more ways to criticize the United States. While Europeans pointed fingers as the pandemic raged in the United States, Americans suffered. Now that the United States edges closer to relative herd immunity and vaccine surpluses are common, anti-American sentiment has returned.
As various countries in the European Union still struggle with securing vaccines, resentment toward America has returned. Social media buzz with blue checkmarks and journalists ranting about equity in COVID-19 vaccine distribution, explicitly condemning the United States for not giving away its vaccines to developing states in Africa and Asia. Social media and media outlets have begun to condemn “vaccine nationalism,” as if countries prioritizing the vaccination of their own citizens are morally reprehensible. While the United States has been excoriated in the past for acting as the world’s policeman, especially by radical leftists and moral busybodies, these groups throw America under the bus for not immediately shouldering the financial impact of vaccine donations and providing other raw materials to developing states.
For all the resentment leftists expressed about the United States under the leadership of President Donald Trump in the worst months of the pandemic, their tune has changed, now that rates of infection and death have decreased. America remains a moral evil while many journalists praise China’s decision to engage in debtbook diplomacy by shipping out considerable quantities of its rather ineffective vaccines to the developing world. Just weeks ago, the former CDC director even doubled down on the prevailing theory that the COVID-19 outbreak originated from lab research gone wrong in Wuhan. The country allegedly responsible for causing the pandemic is being touted for advancing geopolitical interests under the guise of moral obligation – think about that.
The United States perhaps is used to being treated as the world’s punching bag. But liberals on social media continue to pat themselves on the back for vague polling that suggests the international community trusts America more now that President Biden has taken office. For all the legitimate critiques of the America First movement, lack of concern for international issues is not one of them. The United States is always a popular scapegoat unless other countries require our help with money, war, and now with coronavirus vaccines. Is there a moral obligation for countries that used taxpayer money to pay for and distribute the vaccine to provide vaccines free of charge to the rest of the world? The reality is that social media just want more political ammunition to use against the United States.
