Prepare to be shocked.
The Mexican government just announced that it intends to implement a policy that supports President Trump’s efforts against illegal immigration. That’s right — Mexico will soon launch an initiative designed to stem the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States.
You might be thinking: “But the Mexican government has always encouraged its citizens to enter the U.S. illegally!” That’s right, but it appears that under its new leader, Mexico is turning over a new leaf.
The purpose of the free zone is to encourage Mexicans to remain in Mexico to work…
Newly elected Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador recently announced that he is implementing a policy designed to incentivize Mexican citizens to remain in their country rather than attempt to gain illegal entry into the United States. While it is a long-term approach, its success would benefit both countries.
Mexico Announces Free Zones
López Obrador recently announced a plan for his country’s northern border area that it shares with the United States. He will create an economic “free zone” to provide more opportunities for businesses and workers that will spur investments and growth.
The purpose of the free zone is to encourage Mexicans to remain in Mexico to work instead of entering the United States illegally. This initiative represents a dramatic departure from the Mexican government’s previous approach to the issue.
The free zone will offer drastically reduced taxes, a doubling of the minimum wage, and other business- and worker-friendly benefits. “It’s going to be the biggest free zone in the world,” López Obrador said. “It is a very important project for winning investment, creating jobs, and taking advantage of the economic strength of the United States.Mexico president López Obrador
A New Paradigm?
President Trump has cultivated a relationship with López Obrador since he won the Mexican election in 2018. The two leaders have discussed issues related to trade and immigration, and those conversations are bearing fruit.
Of course, the media do not want to report on this story, because this new development marks tremendous progress orchestrated by the Trump administration. It is a gigantic reversal of Mexico’s previous policies.
It’s no wonder that until now Mexico’s leaders have dragged their feet in working with the United States to slow down the illegal outflow of their citizens. The remittances sent back to their home country every year by those finding work or receiving welfare in the United States, likely in the tens of billions, are a boon to Mexico’s economy. Never mind that those dollars were a net loss to the U.S. economy. Another whopper is the amount calculated for all illegal immigrants in the United States: In 2016, more than $100 billion in remittances were sent back to home countries.
Free zones will not produce results overnight, but If Mexican citizens are afforded greater opportunities in their home country, they are less likely to enter the United States illegally. No other American president has persuaded Mexico to become part of the solution instead of contributing to the problem. It’s a paradigm shift.
