President Trump took another shot at the Golden State’s sanctuary status Wednesday morning when he tweeted that the California sections of the border wall won’t be built until the entire project is approved. This comes just days after the president threatened to pull ICE out of the state, leaving them to deal with criminal immigrants on their own.
Is Trump Contradicting Himself?
Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel of California’s Southern District ruled against multiple plaintiffs seeking to block the wall’s construction. The president tweeted that it was a “big legal win.” Then, just eight hours later, this:
I have decided that sections of the Wall that California wants built NOW will not be built until the whole Wall is approved. Big victory yesterday with ruling from the courts that allows us to proceed. OUR COUNTRY MUST HAVE BORDER SECURITY!
Trump’s tweet may seem odd at first glance, especially after Tuesday’s victory in court. It appears to be exactly what the open borders folks want. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra would certainly seem fine with it. Tuesday, he called the wall “medieval” and said that it “simply does not belong in the 21st century.” It may seem contrary to his stance on immigration – but it’s not.
The Method Behind the Madness
California shows no signs of abandoning sanctuary policies any time soon. The Trump administration has already threatened to pull federal funding from any jurisdiction that refuses to cooperate with ICE. Now he’s trying a new tactic. To understand the method behind his madness, we have only to look back at his comment about pulling ICE:
“If we ever pulled our ICE out, if we ever said, ‘hey, let California alone, let them figure it out for themselves,’ in two months they’d be begging for us to come back, they would be begging,” Trump said. “And you know what, I’m thinking about doing it.”
President Trump believes that if he gives the sanctuary folks what they want, crime committed by illegal aliens will skyrocket. He may well be right. If he is, Californians who support these sanctuary policies will soon see the error of their ways. The president seems to be betting that they will and that they’ll beg for a second chance. Donald Trump isn’t conceding to the open borders folk and he isn’t waffling on the issue. He’s giving these leftists just enough rope to hang themselves with.
