Reports that White House attorney Ty Cobb anticipates an interview between the president and Special Counsel Robert Mueller have been swirling the last few days. But the question must be asked: Is this a good idea?
In an exclusive interview with Major Garrett of CBS News, Cobb says that Trump is “very eager” to speak with Mueller. And this will accomplish what exactly? If the president was interviewed by the Special Counsel, what possible good can come out of it? Will his statement change the extreme leftist’s witch hunt to take him down? After all, they repeatedly claim the president is the nation’s liar-in-chief.
On the One Hand
Those in favor of the Mueller-Trump get-together might argue that putting the president on record will answer all the questions of alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians once and for all. They could point to the interview as being the beginning of the end of the investigation. As well, it could be postulated that once the president is on record as having no knowledge of anything to do with the Russians a stake would be put in the heart of the investigation – leaving it nowhere to go.
After all, if the candidate himself had no knowledge of such antics then how could he be held liable even if a few rogue campaign officials went off the deep end by saying and doing things that might be considered collusion? This theory, of course, implies that logic would prevail and thus far very little in the way of logic and evidence have been given priority in this inquiry.
On the Other Hand
But looking at it a different way – nothing can be gained by a Trump-Mueller interview. Witch hunts aren’t exactly known for proceeding with reason and rationality. Often, they result in connecting dots that common sense defies. In other words, two plus two doesn’t always equal four in a witch hunt. It is by nature a search to persecute, and that’s really what this investigation has always been. The left can not accept that they LOST to Donald J. Trump. They simply can’t wrap their brains around it. They keep looking at the raw numbers in the vote and shaking their collective heads. They are scrambling for any way to change the course of the election and think this is their best hand in the card game.
Thus, they continue down the road of a costly and lengthy inquiry that has yielded very little and extended beyond the point of rationality. Even a lucid and honest response to Mueller’s questions by the president isn’t going to make a difference to these people. They are out for blood, and until someone (namely Trump) is left bleeding out on the ground, they will not be mollified.
Giving in to tyrants rarely, if ever, works. As such, President Trump should be circumspect about talking with Mr. Mueller. Aside from the fact that Mueller’s motivations are hinky at best, there’s always the issue of people twisting and turning every single word that comes out of the president’s mouth.
That is, in fact, the left’s specialty.
