CNN Anchor Don Lemon, a progressive activist disguised as a journalist, suggested that the left would need to take drastic steps to assuage the concerns of the disenfranchised voters who are dealing with the apparent inability of the Republicans and Democrats to get it together. Speaking to a less-than-convinced Chris Cuomo, he said that the Electoral College would have to go and that “We’re going to have to blow up the entire system.”
Between Monday and Tuesday night, someone must have gotten through to Lemon about his ill-advised rantings because he attempted to clean them up in another conversation with Cuomo. “I woke up, and I saw all of these headlines, ‘Don Lemon is calling for the abolishing of the electoral college!’ But I was responding to you when you said we need people with integrity!” He said. Lemon continued:
“I was responding to you when you said we want people with integrity in office, and I said, ‘Well, then we’ve got to blow up the whole system, right?’ And I said here’s what Democrats can do, and that’s the danger- they can’ stack the court. But all of a sudden, I am calling for the abolishing of the electoral college … and that I’m a Democrat because I said ‘we.’ I mean the American people!”
Of course, Cuomo came to Lemon’s aid and made a joke about racism. “But listen, you forgot something very fundamental… A Black guy can’t say that he wants to blow anything up right now,” Cuomo quipped. “People are waiting for you to come and destroy their houses with people like me, your kooky White friends. So you can’t say you want to blow stuff up because you’re playing into the narrative.”
As if this story weren’t bizarre enough, Lemon then argued that the nation should at least “look at” the electoral college even after claiming his comments were taken out of context. “Run and tell this: I do think that we need to look at the electoral college because I think it disenfranchises voters, both Democrats, and Republicans,” Lemon said.
Are They Getting Desperate?
It doesn’t seem like a stretch to presume that many on the far left agree with Lemon’s assertions. This isn’t the first time a high-profile progressive has suggested getting rid of the electoral college. The notion that only a few states should decide the course of the entire nation doesn’t seem to matter to them as long as it is they who have the power.
Let’s be clear: Lemon said what he said, and he meant it. Since he is not the only one floating this idea, it makes sense to be aware of what the Democrats might have planned should they win the White House and the Senate. They have already threatened to pack the courts if President Trump doesn’t acquiesce to their demands on Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat, but how much farther would they be willing to go?
