Texas Governor Greg Abbott infuriated the left when he began busing illegal immigrants to Washington, DC, in April. He further raised their ire when he gave New York City the same treatment last month. But now, the Abbott Express has opened up a new destination for migrants: the city of Chicago. Mayor Lori Lightfoot will become the latest Democrat to deal with the consequences of the open borders policies she so publicly supports.
Abbott Express Stops in Chicago
Gov. Abbott announced on Wednesday that the first busload of illegal immigrants had arrived at the Windy City’s Union Station. In a statement, he railed against the Biden administration for failing to address the border crisis that has been ongoing since shortly after the president took office last year. “President Biden’s inaction at our southern border continues putting the lives of Texans — and Americans — at risk and is overwhelming our communities,” the governor said. “To continue providing much-needed relief to our small, overrun border towns, Chicago will join fellow sanctuary cities Washington, D.C. and New York City as an additional drop-off location.”
Abbott also took a shot at Lightfoot, who has boasted of her city’s sanctuary status in the past. “Mayor Lightfoot loves to tout the responsibility of her city to welcome all regardless of legal status, and I look forward to seeing this responsibility in action as these migrants receive resources from a sanctuary city with the capacity to serve them,” he said.
Lightfoot, like the mayors of DC and NYC, was none too pleased to have migrants dumped at her doorstep despite claiming to care about the plight of those seeking to gain entry into the United States. Her office released a statement indicating that it would be working with community partners to make sure the new arrivals have food, shelter, and protection. Then, the Democrat mayor’s team did the typical “everybody is racist” routine.
“This is not new; Chicago welcomes hundreds of migrants every year to our city and provides much-needed assistance,” Lightfoot spokesperson Ryan Johnson said in a statement. “Unfortunately, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is without any shame or humanity. But ever since he put these racist practices of expulsion in place, we have been working with our community partners to ready the city to receive these individuals.”
Why All the Fuss?
Gov. Abbott’s actions have been characterized by Democrats as a political stunt. But even if this is true, it appears quite effective at getting more attention to the situation at the southern border. Even further, Lightfoot has responded to this in the same hypocritical fashion as DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who called the action “horrific.” It underscores the reality that the people claiming to care most for immigrants aren’t quite as sincere as they would have Americans believe. Indeed, if they truly meant what they said, these leaders would have absolutely no problem welcoming such newcomers into their cities. Instead, they have chosen to scream and wail like banshees about the inconvenience.
