Ready to be surprised? The Media Research Center (MRC) analyzed all evening news coverage of Trump from the beginning of 2018 through April 30 and found that 90% of the comments evaluating the president were negative. These results are the same as when they conducted their first study about the Trump administration last year. What a shocker!
When conducting the study, the MRC monitored over 1,774 minutes of news coverage, which constituted one-third of all of reporting on the evening news. They also looked at the other subjects the media covered:
“Nearly two-fifths (39%) of the TV coverage we examined focused on Trump scandals and controversies, while 45 percent was devoted to various policy issues. The remaining airtime was spent on controversies involving other top Trump officials, such as EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, or did not involve specific topics.”
As we already know, the press has pushed the Russiagate narrative as much as possible. According to the MRC, this issue received about one-fifth of the coverage of the Trump administration.
Trump’s Poll Numbers Reveal the Media’s Decreased Influence
MRC’s report reveals two interesting realities. It shows the need for conservatives to find ways to fight the overwhelming media bias against our movement, but also that the media’s influence over the American public is waning.
You would think that with 90% negative coverage by the establishment media, the president’s poll numbers would decrease. Interestingly enough, the opposite has occurred. His job approval rating has increased from 37% in December of 2017 to about 43% in April of 2018. It appears that the impact the press has on public opinion just ain’t what it used to be.
The American public’s trust in the establishment media has been eroding since the beginning of the 2016 campaign. While our legacy news outlets have been biased against conservatives for decades, they went into hyperactive mode when Trump won the Republican nomination. It was as if they weren’t even trying to conceal their agenda. Perhaps they wagered that the majority of Americans shared their opinions. If so, they were wrong.
When the media began launching attacks against the president, they experienced something they had not encountered before: a Republican politician willing to hit them back. The media’s obvious bias combined with a GOP leader who wasn’t afraid to attack them have dealt a tremendous blow to the fourth estate’s credibility.
While the fact that the media’s influence is decreasing is a positive sign, conservatives shouldn’t become complacent. While Trump’s approval rating is climbing, it would be much higher if the press engaged in honest journalism. They do still have some influence.
Since the television airwaves are dominated by left-leaning news outlets, conservatives have begun building a media presence on the internet through social media. While the left is working hard to destroy right-wing media online, their attempts have proven impotent, thus far. Conservatives would do well to continue building a robust media infrastructure online if we are to change more minds. Right now, it is one of the strongest weapons we can use in the war for our culture.
