The left has had a rather hypocritical relationship with the idea of tolerance. While disparaging the right for its supposed intolerance, they repeatedly show the same type of sufferance to people who don’t agree with them. We have recently seen this in their treatment of conservative speakers on college campuses. We have also witnessed it in the way the leftist establishment media reports the news.
Now, we have observed their hypocritical tolerance in full display in their treatment of the black Senator Tim Scott (R-SC). Addressing Congress, Scott read aloud some of the racist and hateful tweets that were sent to him because of his support for Attorney General Jeff Sessions, whom the Democrats painted as a southern bigot who loves the Ku Klux Klan. Here are some of the tweets he received:
“You are a disgrace to the black race.”
“You are an Uncle Tom Scott.”
“How does a black man turn on his own?”
“Senator Tim Scott is not an Uncle Tom, he doesn’t have a shred of honor. He’s a house negro.”
“You are a disgrace to your race.”
What could Senator Scott have done to deserve this type of treatment? He committed the unpardonable sin of being a black conservative. (Cue the dramatic music now.)
It is a well-known fact that the left hates black conservatives with a passion. And the animosity extends to any minority or female who does not fall in line with their political views.
This is because the Democratic party has managed to position itself as the party of minorities, women, and any other group of “disenfranchised” Americans. They’ve been quite effective by preaching a message of victimhood and government dependence.
Naturally, it becomes quite problematic for the Democratic party when a member of the “victimhood class” decides that they disagree with the left’s ideas. The reaction that Senator Scott received is par for the course for any black conservative who has the audacity to reject the left’s message.
After reading the tweets, Senator Scott said,
I left out all the ones that use the N-word. Just felt like that would not be appropriate. You see what I’m surprised by, just a smidgen, is that the liberal left that speaks and desires the rest of us to be tolerant do not want to be tolerant of anyone that disagrees with where they are coming from. So the [essence of their] tolerance isn’t that all Americans experience a high level of tolerance it’s that all Americans that agree with them experience this so-called tolerance.
Senator Tim Scott is spot on; the left has proved over and over that they only practice tolerance with people who agree with them. They claim to value all types of diversity — except diversity of thought and opinion. This hypocritical tolerance is the left’s way of warping and perverting the ideals of tolerance to further their political and cultural agenda.
The left cannot continue to claim that they are the party of tolerance when they use these tactics to shame their opponents into silence. It doesn’t make sense to sling accusations of racism when they use racist tweets to attack people with whom they don’t agree. Instead of talking about tolerance, it might be a good idea to start practicing it first.
