NBCUniversal recently announced a significant reorganization of its corporate structure. As part of the reshuffling, its multiple news outlets will be consolidated under one umbrella, potentially bringing significant changes to its overall broadcasting processes.
NBCUniversal’s New Leadership Structure
Now that NBC News Group President Andy Lack has decided to resign, months earlier than planned, the organization’s leadership is also being altered. Each of the company’s news networks will be merged into one journalistic entity with Cesar Conde, Chairman of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises and former head of Univision, at its helm. These outlets include MSNBC, CNBC, and NBC News.
Jack Shell, NBCUniversal’s CEO, stated that Conde “Is a well-respected, strategic leader who has succeeded in multiple roles at NBCUniversal since joining the company in 2013.”
Conde was instrumental in the rapid growth of Telemundo, which has become the premier Spanish-language network. The heads of each of the aforementioned news outlets will report directly to Conde, who will answer to Shell.
What Does This Move Mean?
Conde has been mostly silent on political matters publicly. But while he was Telemundo’s leader, the network clashed with President Donald Trump. In 2017, the president stated that Telemundo “should be ashamed” of its characterization of his comments on illegal immigrants.
The Media Research Center published a report in 2014, indicating that Telemundo was decidedly left-leaning in its reporting. The study found that Telemundo and its closest competitor, Univision, featured progressive organizations and individuals in their programming more often than they presented right-leaning representatives. While Telemundo denied having a political bias, many have pointed out its skewed reportage.
It is highly likely that Conde will bring this personal preferences to his new role as he oversees outlets that are already biased in favor of the left. There is little doubt that coordinating their reporting will aggressively promote the progressive agenda, especially in this election year.
Impact on 2020 Election?
It has been evident since President Trump took office that the corporate press was intent on derailing his presidency. All the news outlets in NBCUniversal now reporting to Conde have lent their voices to the ongoing outcry against the administration. MSNBC, in particular, peddled the Russiagate hoax incessantly.
Now tightly knit in a common structure, these independent entities likely will work closely on messaging strategy. Just what we need. The reportage from most of the establishment media outlets already resembles a coordinated and extensive propaganda effort against Trump and the GOP.
Despite this new development, it’s important to note that NBCUniversal’s efforts might be too little, too late, given the American public’s lack of trust in corporate media. Even still, this consolidation will be essential to watch in the months to come. Nothing if not persistent, these and other outlets will be working hard to develop new and creative ways to influence American voters. Whose side will they be on?
