Last Friday, President Donald Trump was inaugurated as President of the United States of America. There was much celebration. There was much talk of the future. And…there were riots that continued at a fair clip in cities across the nation all week.
Leftist agitators took to the streets of Washington D.C. They vandalized vehicles and businesses. They started fires. They attacked police officers with bricks. This rioting was only the latest example of the left’s violent response to President Trump. All because their candidate didn’t win the election.
Unfortunately, this does not come as a surprise. The left is known for engaging in violent behavior to express their dissatisfaction.
But why do they do this? Why do liberals riot?
Leftist violence in America began in the 1960’s. It was a time when communism was becoming more and more popular. There were various communist groups that embraced the idea of using violence to create the communist utopia they desired.
Groups like the Weathermen, Students for a Democratic Society, and the Black Panthers were prominent leftist organizations who resorted to violence. Violence was present at the very beginning of the leftist movement in the United States.
Leftists still idolize leaders who carried out numerous atrocities. Ernesto “Che” Guevara, who presided over the murders of thousands of civilians still adorns the T-shirts of young leftists. Fidel Castro, who imprisoned and murdered political opponents is also a subject of their admiration.
Even today, many on the left believe that rioting is the right thing to do. Liberals think rioting works. In an article for the Huffington Post, Jesse Benne puts it this way “Violent resistance matters. Riots can lead to major change.”
Benne also believes that anti-Trump violence is justified because the President is just so horrible that only violence can solve the problem. He goes on to write “The rise of Donald Trump has exposed the frightening underbelly of America’s foulest tendencies.”
Right. And I suppose attacking Trump supporters, destroying private property, and violating people’s right to free speech exposes the best of America, doesn’t it?
Not only is this insanely ignorant…it’s dangerous. Leftist riots are a clear attempt to subvert our political system. It’s an effort to undermine the freedoms that we enjoy in the United States of America. Using violence to push one’s agenda is nothing more than leftist fascism.
These people don’t want to debate ideas. They don’t want to win people to their side by influencing them. They want to force America to do what they want. They wish to cow American citizens into subservience to the left.
The left and the media tend to blame other parties for the actions of leftist rioters. They say that the riots are a response to injustice. In some cases, their grievances are legitimate. In other cases not so much.
Today, their favorite scapegoat is President Donald Trump. After Trump had been elected, there were riots all over the country. It happened in San Jose, California. It happened in Portland, Oregon. And, of course, we have the inauguration day riots.
The left is responsible for the riots. Not Trump supporters.
Politicians deserve some of the blame. Politicians on the left routinely use victimhood culture to encourage this type of behavior. Democrats have skillfully positioned themselves as the party who fights for the oppressed. So, they use the victimhood narrative to further their political goals.
People who subscribe to a victim mentality are much easier to manipulate. It’s one of the reasons why individuals who have been historically oppressed are so loyal to the Democratic party. The problem is that victimhood can cause people to act in ways that are illegal or immoral.
Arthur C. Brooks wrote a piece for the New York Times decrying the growing victimhood culture in our country. In the article, he cites a study that showed that people who adopt a victim mentality were more likely to engage in selfish behavior. He writes:
“In a separate experiment, the researchers found that members of the unfairness group were 11 percent more likely to express selfish attitudes. In a comical and telling aside, the researchers noted that the victims were more likely than the non-victims to leave trash behind on the desks and to steal the experimenters’ pens.”
Victimhood culture is immensely dangerous because if someone feels as if they are legitimately being victimized, they’re more likely to do things that are much worse than stealing pens. Riots happen when a group of people perceives that it is being victimized. We’ve seen this happen in Ferguson and Baltimore.
When Democrats focus more on how a group of people is being victimized than they do on talking about solutions, it can easily result in violence. As the left and the media continue to stoke the fires of victimhood, people become angrier and angrier until it finally boils over.
Of course, sometimes there are people who directly and deliberately incite violence.
During the presidential campaign, investigative journalist James O’Keefe released an undercover video that exposed the collaboration between the Democratic National Committee, Hillary Clinton super-PACs, and the Clinton campaign.
They paid agitators to incite violence at President Trump’s rallies. The objective was to paint Trump supporters as violent, hateful people. The video shows operatives saying that they trained people to provoke Trump supporters into violence. They even admitted that the violent shutdown of the Trump rally in Chicago was caused by this type of operation.
Lastly, the media can also play a large part in fomenting violence. During these riots, it’s not unusual for the press to cover the event in a way that protects the rioters. If they can blame someone else for the violence, they will. And they usually blame the right. There have been numerous times when the media has shown a clear double standard. When a Trump supporter punched a protester, it made national headlines. The video was played over and over again. The fact that it was a white man who punched a black man just made it worse. The media used this video as evidence that Trump supporters are violent racists.
There are numerous reasons why the left chooses to resort to violence, but the main reason is that it’s a part of their ideology. Violent resistance is inherent in leftist political thought. The history of every major leftist power is marked by violence, oppression, and the elimination of dissent. If we wish to move forward as a nation, we can’t allow violence to become part of our political conversation. We need to find better ways to achieve the goals we want. Peaceful discourse is what we need. Not more violence.
