Isn’t it amazing that the left still believes doubling down on identity politics is going to persuade the rest of America to buy into their claims? After decades of race-baiting and scoring cheap political points with false accusations of racism, progressives were handed a striking repudiation of their favored political tactic in 2016. But they clearly haven’t learned their lesson.
In a recent interview, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) claimed that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is a racist agency seeking to oppress black and brown people. Omar and many of her colleagues have been on a crusade against CBP and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the lawmaker’s recent remarks are yet another cog in the open borders machine.
CBP Is Racist?
Rep. Ilhan Omar made an appearance on the BET series Black Coffee, in which she railed against CBP and other “rogue agencies” which supposedly lack accountability. “We know that they have spoken in the most vile ways about immigrants. We know that they have certain views of what brown and black people deserve,” she said. “And so we should be having a conversation about eliminating their existence [and] reforming the agencies that deal with the most vulnerable, who are children and women.”
The lawmaker was referencing the news that border patrol agents created a Facebook group in which some individuals made bigoted remarks about illegal immigrants. When the group was revealed, progressives jumped on the opportunity to label the agency as racist. But, as with most of their claims of bigotry, the facts on the ground show a different story
Some Inconvenient Facts
People on the hard left are fond of labeling any effort to curb illegal immigration as racist and xenophobic, so it is not a surprise that they use this strategy on agencies like CBP and ICE. But one only has to look at the demographics of the employees of both to see that this is another deception.
The Los Angeles Times noted that in 1989, Hispanics made up nearly 36% of the agency. Today, they represent 50% of the organization’s personnel. That’s right, Omar is claiming that an organization with half of its staff being minorities is somehow bigoted.
Is it possible that some of their agents have been out of line in the posts they made in the Facebook group? Yes, but it does not demonstrate that these individuals represent the attitudes of the entirety of the organization. Omar and her ilk know this as do sensible people on both sides of the political divide. So why would she bother to perpetuate this lie?
The answer is simple. She is not trying to fool the rest of the American public; instead, she is playing to her base, which is made up of those who embrace the tenets of intersectionality. Remarks such as these serve to maintain her influence in the intersectional movement, which is currently sweeping the Democratic Party.
Given the results of Sen. Kamala Harris’ verbal smackdown of former Vice President Joe Biden during the Democratic debates, it is clear that the identity-obsessed crowd has amassed a level of influence, and if they continue to dominate, the nation can expect to see an increase in the identity politics being practiced today.
