Try not to be shocked by this one. D.C. leaders have decided that only certain types of activism are acceptable during this time of heightened racial tensions and civil unrest. In the nation’s capital, police officers arrested two pro-life activists the other day for expressing their political beliefs in front of a Planned Parenthood center.
As is typically the case with progressive leaders, there is more than a little hypocrisy at play in this story. It seems that advocating against abortion might not be on par with other offenses.
Pro-Life Activists Arrested in D.C.
Activists working with Students for Life of America, a non-profit pro-life organization, were arrested after writing “Black Pre-Born Lives Matter” in chalk outside Planned Parenthood in D.C. Video footage shows two individuals putting the message on the sidewalk as law enforcement officials approached. “Hey, folks, I need to tell you that if you continue chalking, you’re going to be placed under arrest for defacing property,” one of the officers said. “I’ve given you your warning. You understand that, right?”
The activists continued and, at that point, were placed under arrest. Others who were with the group took issue with the law enforcement officers, pointing out that supporters did this every Saturday and they were writing on public property.
“So we are peacefully gathered here in front of Planned Parenthood in Washington, D.C., and we have students and African American protesters that simply have gathered, and we began to write on the sidewalk with chalk, as many of these young people do all the time, ‘Black Pre-Born Lives Matter,’ and all of a sudden they’ve committed a crime,” one activist said. “They do this every week. I come down here routinely to pray. I see people, and they’ve never arrested anybody before, but today they’re arresting people just because we have decided to peaceably assemble and to stand for black pre-born lives.”
One of the uncomfortable truths this story exposes is the notion that practicing progressive politics means never having to apply your principles consistently. Black Lives Matter activists in D.C. have been engaging in violent riots since the death of George Floyd. Metropolitan police have arrested many of them over the past three months.
In June, District prosecutors dropped felony rioting charges against dozens of those who participated in violent demonstrations in May. Instead, they were charged with such offenses as destruction of property, burglary, and violating a municipal curfew.
Of course, it’s worth noting that it is too early to determine whether prosecutors will give the two pro-life activists a mulligan as they did with the Black Lives Matter protesters. But it seems wise not to hold your breath.
Students for Life, along with other organizations, have been highlighting the disproportionate impact that abortion has had on the black community. The pro-abortion crowd, which seeks to ensure that black mothers have easy access to abort their children at rates higher than the rest of the population, can’t allow this type of pushback to go unanswered. It’s probably only a matter of time before left-leaning governments in other localities take similar action against pro-life advocates.
