President Joe Biden continues to get bad news, especially as it relates to how Americans feel about his presidency. Amid plummeting approval ratings, a new survey was published that could have devastating ramifications for the president and the Democratic Party.
Iowans Aren’t Fond of Biden
According to the latest Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll, “fewer than one third of Iowans approve of the job Joe Biden is doing as president,” which the report describes as “a steep drop from earlier this year.”
The report further notes: “Thirty-one percent of Iowans approve of how Biden is handling his job, while 62% disapprove and 7% are not sure, according to the latest Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll.”
This represents a 12-point drop from Biden’s approval rating in June, and his disapproval rating jumped about 10 points during the same period. Even worse, the report points out that the president’s approval “has not been in net positive territory in Iowa since March, when 47% of Iowans approved of his performance and 44% disapproved.”
Predictably, opinions on Biden’s performance fall largely along party lines, with only 4% of Republicans approving and 95% disapproving. Among Democrats, 86% approved, while 7% disapproved. Independents, however, are where we see the big jump. About 62% were disappointed in his performance, while only 29% thought he was doing well.
Biden’s approval in Iowa is now lower than former President Donald Trump’s at the same point in his tenure in office.
Iowans are largely critical of how the Biden administration handled the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Only 22% of respondents approved of the withdrawal effort, while 69% disapproved. One of the participants said: “The way we exited Afghanistan was pretty sad.” He continued:
“Not the fact that we left Afghanistan, because we probably should have done that a long time ago, but just the way we did that it felt like Americans were abandoned and it felt like we just left equipment there.”
President Biden is also losing ground on the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier in the year, he received high ratings from the American public – including Iowans – for his handling of the coronavirus. But now, things have changed. About 36% of respondents indicated they approved of Biden’s handling of the pandemic, while 60% disapproved. That’s a 17-point drop from June.

Some of the respondents were not happy with President Biden’s announcement that he would impose a vaccine mandate compelling companies to require their employees to either get the jab or participate in weekly testing. This measure would impact over 2,200 Iowa businesses. One participant said, “I think forcing people to inject something into their body isn’t the right way to handle it.”
Disaster for Democrats?
This is the state that generally kicks off the presidential election season, and the nation pays attention to the opinions of Iowans. The fact that Biden is doing so poorly is telling even though 2024 is still three years away. And considering the ineptitude of this administration so far, it’s no stretch of the imagination to assume there will be flubs aplenty as the time draws nearer.
It is also worth noting that these findings could portend bad news for the Democratic Party as a whole – especially when it comes to the upcoming 2022 elections. Most left-leaning politicians support the measures Biden embraces, especially when it comes to the authoritarian approach to the COVID-19 outbreak. It won’t be surprising if this becomes yet another sign the party is headed towards disaster.
