There is more news today of the settlement between the IRS and some 400 organizations targeted for political persecution that continues to ooze out of the muck and mire that is The Swamp. Reports are that an apology by Attorney General Jeff Sessions is accompanied by a 3.5M settlement for the tax agencies illegal and unconscionable scrutiny of organizations applying for 501(c)3 non-profit status.
But now that the money and an apology have been settled, it seems that IRS Senior Executive Lois G. Lerner is in the crosshairs again. And for many who have been persecuted by the most powerful agency of the most powerful government in the world – this comes not a moment too soon.
It was under Lerner’s watch that the tyranny of the IRS ruled for years. It was under Ms. Lerner that these illegal acts of political persecution were consistently and systematically applied. It was Ms. Lerner who took the Fifth repeatedly in Congressional hearings on the matter. And it was under Ms. Lerner’s watch that IRS emails from the period of time in question magically disappeared.
Tyranny at Work
Liberty Nation’s parent organization One Generation Away was one of the more than 400 targeted and listed in the class action suit against the IRS. It is a repugnant tale of abuse of power, tyranny and the perversion of the rule of law. Now there are calls to re-open the IRS investigation. One such request comes from Tom Fitton, head of Judicial Watch:
“The IRS is a political tool for politicians in power and we have to understand that and take that tool away from them because it’s liable to be abused and it’s beenabused repeatedly over the years. I don’t know how many lessons we learn before taking action,” Fitton said. “Abuse of power necessarily means something was done inappropriately and the question is can we trust the last administration, the politicized Justice Department under Eric Holder and Loretta Lynch and the FBI under James Comey to honestly investigate the IRS and I don’t think you can.”
According to the Washington Times, another call to reopen the case comes from the head of an Ohio Tea Party that was targeted:
“Tom Zawistowski, head of the Portage County Tea Party in Ohio, said Ms. Lerner should have faced criminal charges for her role, which court documents filed earlier in the case show involved her trying to shield the activity by changing names but overall approving and in fact intensifying the scrutiny the conservative groups were given.
He said he still wants the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to pursue the case and get to the bottom of the motive behind the targeting.”
The Abuse of Power
All is not said and done. Ms. Lerner and a compatriot Holly Paz were deposed by a group filing suit in Ohio. Apparently, those depositions remain sealed because the two women say they fear for their lives should it be made public. What does that tell you?
This chilling IRS scandal reeks of abuse of power and tyranny the likes of which Aristotle and Plato spoke of more than two thousand years ago. “Tyranny,” said Plato was the “fourth and worst disorder of a state.” And he postulated that this is primarily because tyrants lost their most powerful “instrument of judgment” which is the ability to reason.
It is in these times that it is important to remember that in a civil society no one is exempt from the rule of law – not even those who hold the reins of power. And that principle may be exactly what Ms. Lerner and her minions are about to find out.
