If you needed any more proof that the Democrats are not concerned about the plight of the Dreamers, look no further. Recently, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) – who is primed to become the next Speaker of the House – indicated the party would turn down a proposal that would have provided legislative fixes to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) migrant program. Well, so much for the Dreamers.
You do not need to be a thermonuclear physicist to guess why the Democrats might turn down a deal that could benefit DACA recipients. Pelosi’s rejected the deal because it also includes funding for the border wall. Apparently, the Democrats believe that the United States does not yet have enough people crossing the border illegally, so a wall is out of the question.
Democrats Reject DACA Deal
Recently, Pelosi spoke to reporters about the future of the DACA program. During the press conference, she argued that building a wall on the southern border is “immoral.” She said:
“… most of us, speaking for myself, consider the wall immoral, ineffective, expensive, and the president said he promised it. He also promised Mexico would pay for it. So, even if they did, it’s immoral still … We have a responsibility, all of us, to secure our borders – north, south, and coming in by plane … and that’s a responsibility we honor, but we do so by honoring our values as well.”
It is not known whether Pelosi had her fingers crossed behind her back as she discussed the country’s responsibility to “secure our borders.” Nevertheless, her comments demonstrate the Democrats’ willingness to ignore the Dreamers if it means preventing the wall from being built.
Congress recently passed a short-term spending bill to prevent a partial government shutdown, essentially delaying debate on immigration and other issues until later in December.
Despite this congressional procrastination, it appears that a few members of the GOP are not backing down in their efforts to obtain funding for the border wall.
Cruz’s Bill for Wall Funding
On the 5th of December, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) in conjunction with Senators James Inhofe (R-OK), Mike Rounds (R-SD), and John Kennedy (R-LA) introduced a bill that could make it easier to pay for construction of the wall. The WALL Act is the first proposal that has identified potential sources of funding: In a recent press release, Sen. Cruz stated, “The WALL Act would fully fund the border wall by closing existing loopholes that provide illegal immigrants with federal benefits and tax credits, without affecting the benefits and tax credits used by Americans.”
If the bill passes, it will provide specific means to raise $25 billion needed to erect the border wall. The proposed changes include:
- Welfare recipients will be required to verify citizenship.
- A work-authorized Social Security number will be required to claim refundable tax credits.
- An increase in minimum fines for those who cross the border illegally.
- A minimum fine for individuals who overstay their visas.
Sen. Rounds explained that implementing increased fines would “prevent any risk of dipping into the Department of Defense (DOD) funding, which is already stretched thin.”
Will The US Ever Crack Down?
Democrats will do everything in their power to impede any proposed legislation that could address the illegal immigration issue.
Simply put, the Democrats will do everything in their power to impede any proposed legislation that could address the illegal immigration issue. For them, it is more important to import more potential voters and maintain an electoral edge. Unless the American people find a way to pressure the Democrats to take the issue seriously, it is improbable that the country will see any improvements in border security anytime soon.
