Joe Lieberman Dies at 82

A Connecticut Democrat who recorded a notable political first 24 years ago has passed. “Former Sen. Joe Lieberman, who became the first Jewish vice-presidential candidate of a major party when Al Gore selected him as his running mate in the 2000 election, has died at age 82,” The Hill reports. “His family said Lieberman died Wednesday in New York City surrounded by family, including his wife Hadassah, after suffering complications from a fall,” the news site notes.

Gore Wingman: “Lieberman was one of the most conservative members of the Senate Democratic caucus and burst into the national spotlight in 1998 by scolding then-President Bill Clinton on the Senate floor over his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, calling his conduct ‘disgraceful’ and disappointing. His independent streak factored into Gore’s decision to select him as a running mate, which enabled the then-vice president to put some distance between himself and the scandals of the Clinton administration.”

Hunter Biden Lawyers Move to Have Tax Case Dismissed

It doesn’t appear to have been a successful day for Hunter Biden. “Lawyers for Biden on Wednesday asked a federal judge in Los Angeles to throw out nine tax-related charges, arguing that the president’s son is being vindictively prosecuted by the Justice Department and had his rights trampled by two IRS agents who publicly revealed his confidential tax records,” The Los Angeles Times reports. At a hearing, US District Judge Mark C. Scarsi appeared skeptical about Biden’s eight motions to dismiss the criminal charges, pointing out that his lawyers had little evidence to bolster some of their arguments. Scarsi said he would rule on the motions by April 17. Biden did not attend the hearing,” the paper relates.

Troubled Son? “Three of the nine charges in the indictment are felonies – tax evasion and twice filing false tax returns – and center on how Biden reported his 2018 taxes. Prosecutors allege he misclassified several personal expenses that year as business expenses, such as $30,000 for his daughter’s tuition, $1,500 to an exotic dancer and $11,500 to an escort, according to the indictment.” Related: Hunter Biden the artist owes his success to political cronyism…

FTX Founder Bankman-Fried To Be Sentenced Today

Will Sam Bankman-Fried be spending the next few decades behind bars? “Bankman-Fried will learn his sentence today, four months after he was found guilty of orchestrating the multibillion-dollar fraud that prompted the collapse of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange,” NBC News reports. “A federal jury in New York City convicted Bankman-Fried, 32, in November on each of the two counts of fraud and five counts of conspiracy he faced. He has been jailed at the Metropolitan Detention Center facility in Brooklyn ever since, with his bail having been revoked over witness-tampering allegations,” the network details.

Long Stretch Looming: “Federal prosecutors are seeking as much as 50 years of the statutory 110-year sentence implied by the conviction. Bankman-Fried apparently lacks a criminal history, and prosecutors rarely seek the statutory maximum, said John Coffee, a professor at Columbia University Law School specializing in white-collar criminal defense.” Related: The collapse of FTX – incompetence or grift of the century?

Baltimore Bridge Crash Ship Carried Hazardous Material

It could have been another US transportation environmental disaster. “The cargo ship that caused the Baltimore bridge collapse was carrying hazardous materials, the National Transportation Safety Board said,” the Associated Press reports. “NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said there are 56 containers aboard containing hazardous materials, including corrosives, flammables and lithium ion batteries. She said some containers were breached and a sheen was identified in the water that will be dealt with by authorities. She said the voyage data recorder has been recovered,” the wire service writes.

Lengthy Probe: “Homendy said the investigation could take 12 to 24 months but that the NTSB will not hesitate to issue urgent safety recommendations during that time. She said a preliminary report should be released in two to four weeks. The ship was undergoing ‘routine engine maintenance’ in the port beforehand, the Coast Guard said. US Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said at a news conference on Wednesday that authorities had been informed that the ship was going to undergo routine engine maintenance before it lost power. But he said authorities were not informed of any problems.”

Ex-LA Deputy Mayor Convicted On Corruption Charges

A former top official in Democrat-run Los Angeles should soon be headed to prison. “Former Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Raymond Chan was found guilty on Wednesday of federal racketeering, conspiracy and bribery charges for his role in a scheme run by convicted ex-City Councilmember José Huizar to monetize the real estate approval process at City Hall,” City News Service reports. “The guilty verdicts on all counts came a little over an hour after the federal criminal jury in downtown Los Angeles began deliberations for the day. Sentencing was set for June 10,” the regional news agency states.

‘Get Money’: “Chan, 67, was a key member of the so-called Council District 14 enterprise, a conspiracy in which Huizar – assisted by others – unlawfully used his office to give favorable treatment to wealthy developers who financed and facilitated bribes and other illicit benefits. A mistrial was declared in Chan’s first trial last year due to a defense attorney’s medical emergency. During opening statements two weeks ago in Chan’s retrial, Assistant US Attorney Brian Faerstein said the longtime Los Angeles official had three goals: ‘Get money, keep power, and avoid the feds.’”
