Congress Stopgap Measure Averts Partial Govt Shutdown

Another delaying action is in place. “The Senate followed the House in passing a temporary extension of government funding on Thursday, sending the measure to President Joe Biden’s desk after a bipartisan vote that once again averts a government shutdown,” CBS News reports. “The Senate voted 77-13 to approve the short-term extension that funds some government agencies for another week, through March 8, and others until March 22. The House passed the bill earlier in the day by a vote of 320-99. The president has said he will sign the legislation,” the network writes.

Kicking the Can Down the Road: “‘I’m happy to inform the American people there will be no government shutdown on Friday,’ Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said. ‘Now let us finish the job of funding the government so we don’t have to do this again.’ Six of the 12 annual spending bills will now need to be passed before the end of next week. The leaders said the one-week extension was necessary to allow the appropriations committees ‘adequate time to execute on this deal in principle’ and give lawmakers time to review the package’s text.” Read More: Congress keeps the government going – for now…

Trump Labels Border Crisis ‘a Biden Invasion’

Former President Donald Trump didn’t mince words during his trip to south Texas. “Trump on Thursday said the border crisis is a ‘a Joe Biden invasion. This is a Biden invasion,’” The Center Square reports. “Trump met with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in Eagle Pass to tour a new military base established through Abbott’s border security mission, Operation Lone Star. ‘What they showed me is nothing less than incredible. This is a military operation. This is like a war,’ Trump said. The 80-acre complex will hold up to 2,300 troops in a base camp overseeing border operations for the state’s 1,254 shared miles of border with Mexico,” the news site notes.

‘Worst Ever’: “Trump called President Biden, who was visiting Texas at the same time in Brownsville, ‘crooked’ and ‘a terrible president, the worst president our country has ever had and probably the most incompetent president we’ve ever had.’ Biden for his part called on Trump to join him in supporting immigration reform legislation in Congress. Biden Admin Calls Illegal Aliens ‘Newcomers’

As Americans grow more irate over the illegal alien crisis plaguing their communities, the Biden administration is taking a soothing tone to the calamity. “President Joe Biden’s White House has begun referring to border crossers and illegal aliens as ‘newcomers’ and ‘people who are in the country’ – a terminology distinction that conflicts with federal immigration law,” Breitbart reports. “On Thursday – while promoting a Senate bill to preserve his catch and release network at the United States-Mexico border – Biden’s White House made a passing reference to border crossers and illegal aliens,” the news site relates.

Words Matter: “The White House fact sheet on the Senate immigration reform bill reads: ‘The bill also includes $1.4 billion for cities and states who are providing critical services to newcomers, and would expedite work permits for people who are in the country and qualify.’ The Biden administration has made it a point to rid the Department of Homeland Security of all references to ‘illegal aliens’ or ‘illegal immigrants,’ instead demanding officials use ‘more inclusive’ terms like ‘noncitizens’ and ‘undocumented individual.’” Related: Weighing and measuring Biden’s border crisis…

Herridge Held in Contempt for Not Naming Source

A prominent news reporter is under the gun, and the ramifications may extend to all of journalism. “A federal judge on Thursday held veteran investigative reporter Catherine Herridge in civil contempt for refusing to divulge her source for a series of Fox News stories about a Chinese American scientist who was investigated by the FBI but never charged,” the Associated Press reports. “US District Judge Christopher Cooper in Washington imposed a fine of $800 per day until Herridge reveals her source, but the fine will not go into effect immediately to give her time to appeal,” the wire service details.

Obama Appointee: “Cooper wrote that he ‘recognizes the paramount importance of a free press in our society’ and the critical role of confidential sources in investigative journalism. But the judge said the court ‘also has its own role to play in upholding the law and safeguarding judicial authority.’ ‘Herridge and many of her colleagues in the journalism community may disagree with that decision and prefer that a different balance be struck, but she is not permitted to flout a federal court’s order with impunity,’ wrote Cooper, who was nominated to the bench by former President Barack Obama.”

DeSantis Signs Bill to Unseal Epstein Court Files

Are the American people about to learn a lot more about Jeffrey Epstein? “More than two decades after Epstein sexually abused dozens of girls in Palm Beach, Florida, his victims may finally learn how and why the state prosecutor’s handling of the case allowed Epstein to escape a prison term more in line with the serious crimes he committed,” The Miami Herald reports. “On Thursday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill that permits the unsealing of the long-secret evidence and testimony presented to a 2006 Palm Beach grand jury, leading the panel to return an indictment against Epstein on only minor prostitution charges,” the paper states.

How the Deal Went Down: “At the time, Palm Beach police had interviewed at least six girls who claimed Epstein had sexually assaulted them as part of a massive scheme in which they were also pressured to recruit more girls for him to abuse over many years. DeSantis noted that the Epstein case – and the plea deal the financier struck with state and later, federal prosecutors – has long been a ‘black eye’ on the nation’s criminal justice system.”
