Liberty Nation: Daily Snapshot – 4.20.20

The news you need - ready to go!

Welcome to Liberty Nation’s Daily Snapshot. All the top news of the day, the latest polls, and more.

What’s happening in the political sphere – the hot stories making the news today.

  • House Republicans are becoming impatient with the current Coronavirus lockdowns, just as many ordinary Americans appear to be. “It is impossible for us to sustain this,” Rep. Jody Hice (R-GA) – a member of the Freedom Caucus – told The Hill. “The only way we get over this is to open the economy and let free enterprise do this job, let people get back to work. And we’ve got to do that as rapidly as possible.”
  • Democratic Party 2020 hopeful Joe Biden appears to be using his podcast, Here’s the Deal, as a vehicle for vetting prospective running mates. Biden has already had on Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer – who seems to be winning no friends, currently, in her home state – and next up will be former presidential candidate Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), according to Axios. That’s going to be some riveting viewing.
  • The Democratic Party of Wyoming on Sunday declared Joe Biden the winner of the state’s caucuses. Biden got 72.2% of the popular vote and gained another 10 delegates. In-person caucusing had been suspended, and the voting was conducted by mail.

The latest polls and trends impacting the United States.

  • According to FiveThirtyEight’s opinion tracker, the number of Americans who are concerned that they or someone they know will contract Coronavirus has declined for the first time since the question has been asked. Meanwhile, the number of people who are not very concerned has crept up slightly. 33.7% are very concerned, 37.8% are somewhat concerned, 19.2% are not very concerned, and 8.1% are not at all concerned.
  • While 48% of Americans say they are not having trouble finding the things they need, 23% say they are still having difficulty finding toilet paper. To this day, nobody seems to know why the wiping stuff disappeared so suddenly from the stores and has since been harder to find than a grown-up at an Antifa rally.
  • Does Joe Biden have an enthusiasm problem? It appears so. 15% of Democrat or Democrat-leaning voters say they are dissatisfied – but not upset – that Biden is the presumptive Democratic Party nominee. 13% are upset, though. So where’s the love? Well, 35% said they were enthusiastic about Biden’s impending nomination, while another 33% said they are satisfied – but not enthusiastic.

Something political to ponder as you enjoy your morning coffee.

There can be no denying that the restrictions on movement, the social distancing rules, the stay-at-home orders, and the shutdowns – none of which bear even a shred of constitutional credibility – have been hard on everyone. Those Americans, both politicians and private citizens, who dislike President Trump, appear to be almost united in their insistence that the status quo be maintained for a while longer, if not indefinitely. Trump’s supporters, by contrast, are nearly harmonious in their belief that things must be returned to normal as soon as possible. One needs no more proof, then, that this division is all about politics, rather than public safety. The former group – the anti-Trumpers – have clearly developed what one might call a groundhog complex. They fear that if upon emerging from their enforced hibernation, they spy their own shadows, it would portend another four years of Trumpian winter.
